Kiruna is the northernmost municipality in Sweden, and geographically it is as large as the three southernmost counties of Scania, Blekinge and Halland grouped together.
Iron ore is extracted in Kiruna and Malmberget, and brought by rail to the harbours of Luleå and Narvik.

The city of Kiruna was founded some 100 years ago by geologist Hjalmar Lundbohm, the first director of the LKAB mine, whose vision was to build a model city, where mine and city would be located apart yet close to each other.
