Baffin next took service with the British East India Company, and in 1617-1619 performed a voyage to Surat in British India, and on his return received the special recognition of the Company for certain valuable surveys of the Red Sea and Persian Gulf which he had made in the course of the voyage.
Early in 1620 he again sailed to the East, and in the Anglo-Persian attack on Kishm[?] in the Persian Gulf, preparatory to the reduction of Ormuz[?], he received his death-wound and died, January 23, 1622.
Besides the importance of his geographical discoveries, Baffin is to be remembered for the importance and accuracy of his numerous scientific and magnetic observations, for one of which (the determination of longitude at sea by lunar observation) the honour is claimed of being the first of its kind on record.

Road builders are hard at work, however, constructing a new route directly from Kishm to Faizabad across the highlands.
Several other towns, such as Baharak and Kishm in addition to those now mere mounds on the landscape, have claimed the status of capital for short periods as individual fortunes shone with the success of charismatic leaders.
The history of Badakhshan is, however, one of extreme complexity stemming from the ruggedness of the terrain and the independent nature of its inhabitants who tolerated outsiders only momentarily and even then kept them in frustrated isolation in the lower valleys.

Ahmad Shah Masood is now battling to stem a Taleban offensive that threatens to drive him into his mountain stronghold of the Panjsher Valley and cut his last link to neighbouring Tajikistan, severing his overland supply conduit.
Fighting near the border is likely to be followed by an attack on the town of Kishm as part of a drive to take Badakhshan province, which has the last foreign border under Masood's control.
The loyalty of the population cannot be assumed and Masood's forces have been strengthening defences while engaging the Taleban further north in what some see as an attempt to divert pressure.

THE IRANIAN: Travel, Nantucket and Persian Gulf Islands, Guive Mirfendereski
This island got its name from the kind of kishmish, raisin, that was found on the island, displacing such other appellations as the "Long Island" of the earlier era.
Another interesting point about Kishm is the origin of the name of a locality on its western extremity that most sources call Basidu.
Originally it was called Bandar-e Sangu, probably on the account of the rocks found in and around it; the English then turned the name into Bassadore, and it eventually became Basidu.
