Kishon River - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Kishon River is a river in Israel that flows into the Mediterranean Sea at the city of Haifa.
Considered the most polluted river in Israel, it has been the subject of controversy regarding the struggle to improve the water quality.
It is often claimed today that there are more chemicals than water in the river, and that washing ones hands in this river can cause severe chemical burns.

In the past, the natural sources of the river were trapped for drinking and agriculture purposes.
ýDownstream, the river is impacted by the infiltration of seawater in a daily cycle of ebb and flow, which bestows it with the unique character of an estuary, and by elevated and saline groundwater.
At the entrance of the Zippori River into the Kishon, some 7 kilometers from the point of discharge to the sea, the polluted section of the river begins.

Kishon, Israel — Spreading thick fl smoke across the Haifa Bay area, a major fire broke out on Tuesday at the Haifa Chemicals factory near this northern coastal city in Israel.
Its factory along the bank of the Kishon river has been operating since 1966, and up to last year it discharged an average of five million litres of toxic effluents each day.
The 200 or so fishermen of the area, who regularly have to replace parts of their boats corroded by the acidic water, show an astonishing cancer rate of 20 percent, and 19 have already died from cancer.
