Kiss Me, Kate doesn't pucker up - Arts & Entertainment
I attended Kiss Me, Kate Thursday night; the musical was performed February 24, 25, and 26 at the Bradley Building and directed by James Crawford.
He had a large range throughout the night, hitting some lower notes that surprised me. The sarcasm of both Petruchio and Fred was a laugh a minute, along with the rare sentimental moments when Fred was by himself on stage, showing the ability of Evans to act out sarcasm and tragedy.
Her singing voice was pleasant on the ears and when she was on stage, I believed she was a stuck up brat who needed to cover her inner feelings with anger.

Kiss Me Kate may not match the hi-falutin' Art of An American in Paris but it's got the MGM musical unit's second-string talent showing themselves at their very best.
MGM's DVD of Kiss Me Kate is a bright new transfer with a wonderful remixed track and a separate music-only track for those who want to hear Saul Chaplin's interstitial music.
Here is some additional information regarding Kiss Me Kate's original theatrical exhibition which may or may not explain the framing issues with the DVD (note: the original disc before correction).

Kiss Me Kate was one of the last major musicals to be shot in the old standard format, and it was soon realized that the novelty of 3-D would never be able to compete with widescreen.
Viewers who claim to have seen Kiss Me Kate in widescreen probably saw a bit of mischief perpertrated by unscrupulous studio moguls who in their rush to get on the widescreen band wagon stooped to trimming the tops and bottoms of 35 mm film in order to achieve the 16:9 format.
That the film version of Kiss Me Kate lacks the bite of the stage version is because of puritanical censorship codes that were rigorously enforced until well into the 1960's, and cannot be blamed on the film's creative team.

Scenic Design: Kiss Me Kate | Portfolio | Miguel Romero
KISS ME Designing a musical is a very exciting assignment that makes logistical demands in the form of multiple scenes, some intimate and others able to accommodate dance and chorus numbers.
Kiss Me Kate, in particular, requires the designer to create two separate worlds: the contemporary story of clashing theatrical egos and the Renaissance period musical play-within-the-play based on The Taming of the Shrew.
For this production, my design had to work for the two theatre companies who co-produced it—one with a thrust stage and the other a conventional proscenium stage.

The idea for the show began germinating in 1935 when producer Saint Subber, then a stagehand for the Theatre Guild's production of "The Taming Of The Shrew", became aware that its stars, Alfred Lunt and Lynne Fontanne, quarreled in private almost as much as did the characters they were portraying in the play.
