Kiss of the Spider Woman - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Kiss of the Spider Woman (Portuguese: O Beijo da Mulher Aranha) is a 1985 American-Brazilian film which tells the story of two men in an Argentine prison during the 1970s military government — one a political prisoner, the other in prison for his homosexuality — who learn to respect each other.
The story is a "movie within a movie," featuring Hurt episodically telling Juliá the plot of the movie "Kiss of the Spider Woman" made in Germany during the Second World War, sc.
A musical with the same title, also based on Puig's novel, was written by John Kander and Fred Ebb with book by Terrence McNally.

Theater Review: 'Kiss of the Spider Woman'
iss of the Spider Woman,' the last musical of the season, is far and away the most thrilling, and not just because it allows a largely unknown Canadian actor, Brent Carver, to make an electrifying Broadway debut.
Her portrayal of the treacherous Spider Woman, whose kiss brings instant death to stouthearted men, is one he'd rather put out of his mind, but otherwise he can usually mine her celluloid repertory for lush and glamorous scenes to subvert the here and now.
'Kiss of the Spider Woman' brings them to life in a series of brilliant musical numbers that transform bare-chested convicts into chorus boys, steel bars into canes and the prison itself into a low-rent Copacabana.

Manuel Puig's novel, "Kiss of the Spider Woman" first appeared in print in 1976, was filmed with a strangely cast William Hurt as Molina, and eventually musicalized for London and Broadway over a decade ago.
Musical Director Robert Ollis' 5-piece combo sounds lush and scintillating, and when you have a score as potent as Kander and Ebb at their peak, you are in for a real treat.
Katherine Lynne Condit, who credits Broadway, national and international tours on her resume, has difficulty projecting her voice over the band, but her sultry dual performance as the slinky B-movie star Aurora and the angel of death known as the Spider Woman are otherwise right on target.

In the age of lugubrious British musicals and complex Sondheim creations, the shows of Kander and Ebb struck me as carrying forward the style of Broadway musicals of the Golden Age, but with an ironic sensibility appropriate to the end of the twentieth century.
So in Kiss of the Spider Woman, the current New Line production set in an Argentine prison during the oppressive military rule a quarter century ago, the movie-inspired fantasies of the gay prisoner Molina offer Kander and Ebb a perfect opportunity for their kind of musical.
The song "Kiss of the Spider Woman" is one of those haunting Kander and Ebb numbers, a near-perfect example of musical theatre at its best.

Kiss of the Spider Woman is one of those films whose ideas are so richly provocative, and successfully realized often enough, that their considerable missteps don't impact the full viewing experience nearly as much as they should.
It is to its credit, certainly, that Kiss of the Spider Woman translates its notions of class conflict, penal injustice, and the crucibles of Latin America's oppressive regimes to an English-speaking public that tends to get nervous about any one of those subjects.
Sifting through all the implications of Kiss of the Spider Woman's last half-hour is likely to be confusing, and possibly infuriating, all the more so because narcotic hallucination abruptly gets thrown in as a variable in the anarchic collapse of the film's point of view.

'KISS OF THE SPIDER Woman' is a story of sharp contrasts, from the philosophies and lifestyles of its two main characters--gay window dresser Molina and revolutionary Valentin--to the Argentinean prison cell they share and the fantasy world they create to escape from it.
These contrasts are sadly lacking in the musical version of Manuel Puig's 1976 novel, particularly in TheatreWorks' current production; thus the tension and the beauty of the original work are all but lost.
