Seitz Violins - Myths and Facts
If you have a violin whose pedigree is in question, first, assume it's a copy for the chances are good that it is not authentic to the label.
Violin strings are made from a variety of materials, such as various types of steel, nylon, silk, perlon and real animal gut wrapped in aluminum or silver or even gold.
The Encyclopedia Britannica states that an Italian term for violin was "kit" and hence a gut string would be called a "kit gut." This in time developed into "cat gut." Another explanation is that when gut strings were first manufactured in Europe, the best strings came from Catagniny, Germany.

This is the length of the string from nut to bridge on bowed or plucked instruments and ultimately determines the distance between different notes on the instrument.
On the shorter scale of the violin, the left hand may easily reach a range of slightly more than two octaves without shifting position, while on the bass´ longer scale, a single octave or a ninth is reachable in lower positions.
With instruments such as the violin or guitar the player may press down on the strings with their fingers or some other device in order to effectively shorten the length of it which vibrates.

A kit is played, mainly by men,(for obvious reasons) held on your chest, not under your chin hence the awkward (to us) bow angle.
For me it has many differences to kits, pochettes or dance master's fiddles, most of these instruments don't have a typical violin shape, where the one i have really imitates this shape.

The dance masters by the late 16th century had adopted the violin as the primary melody line instrument, but often violins were either prohibited as wholy "court" instruments, or simply too expensive or bulky.
I already play the violin, and in my laziness did not want to have to relearn my finger positioning, so the string length is exactly the same as that on my violin from the bridge to the pegbox notch, and as such should have similar fingering to the violin.
