It is the home of Kita Daito village.

Daito Islands (大東諸島 Daitō Shotō) are three eastern islands of Okinawa Islands.
Kita, minami, and oki means, respectively, "north," "south," and "shore" while daitō means "great east."

Record: The BL records the bird from Okinawa, Miyako, Ishigaki, Iriomote, Yonaguni and Daito Is. Ikenaga observed one bird on Iheya on 4 May 1984, and McWhirter saw one on Tokashiki on 8 October 1985.
Ikenaga and Numaguchi observed one in Iheya on 2 November 1985.
Kaneda recorded the bird in Iheya on 3-5 February 1984, Ikenaga observed one on Tonaki on 10 October 1986, and McWhirter saw one on Tokashiki on 20 October 1985.

It is the annual sports competition between Kita and Minami Daito Islands for the next two days.
This year it is Minami`s turn to host the event, meaning organizing meals, places to stay and of course, the many bottles of awamori for approximately 215 incoming Kita daito people.
I, not being a very good sports woman or anything, was not asked to be part of any teams, but to help make meals with the other women.

This is a memorial to Tamaoki Hanemon, who pioneered the development of the Kita and Minami Daito-jima Islands, which were uninhabited until then.
Having made a fortune collecting feathers on Hachijo-jima Island, close to Tokyo, his group made the difficult sea crossing to Minami Daito and finally landed in January of 1900.
Developing both Minami Daito and the neighboring Kita Daito, he laid the foundation for the current progress of the two islands.

Shiroma-san, my head boss, former Sumo champ, and one of the only people on Daito taller than me; he is definitely a good guy.
These are the ruins of a huge pre-war phosphorous (sp?) factory on Kita Daito.
Before the war, Kita Daito actually had a rather large population of phosphorous miners (much larger than today's population of 500), and phosphorous was thier main method of income.

On the afternoon of 31 March, Flying Fish was attacked by a Japanese submarine, whose torpedoes she skillfully evaded.
Bound for Majuro at the close of her patrol, the submarine torpedoed and sank a freighter moored at Kita Daito Jima.
Refitting at Majuro between 11 April 1944 and 4 May, Flying Fish then sailed for her tenth war patrol, coordinated with the assault on the Marianas scheduled to open the next month.

Kita Daito Island celebrated its 100th year of settlement in a ceremony at Kita Daito Village, Thursday.
The first inhabitants of the remote island came from Minami Daito Island in a small “sabani,” a traditional narrow Okinawan fishing boat.
The Okinawa Municipalities Promotion Committee, a grouping of Okinawan municipalities and various business and civic organizations that promotes better planning of local communities and Okinawan traditional looking buildings, had a general meeting Thursday.

I am still living in Minami Daito, Japan so the updates are pretty slow.
No, it is not a baby:), it is the fact that my fiancee has been placed for the JET Program (Japan Exchange and Teaching) in a place that we never even KNEW of:) The city is called Minami Daito and is on one of two islands ~230 miles east of the island of Okinawa.
The island of Minami Daito is ~5 miles wide by 6 miles long and has a sister smaller island called Kita Daito just to the north.

I was called in at 6 am by my BOE`s wife (I consider her my Okinawan second mother) to help the other Minami women make meals for the 215 Kita daito visitors.
Feeling tired of being on my feet, I made my way to watch and cheer on the girls volleygame with my JH students.
I was bombarded with rumours and congratulations this morning at school that the Kita daito ALT and I are actually an item.

Truly this leadership is what made Mike the excellent person that he was.As Mike had died thousands of miles from home, it is fitting that he is also remembered thousands of miles from home.
I am currently teaching on Kita Daito island 360 km east of
in the middle of the Pacific. On Saturday, all of the members of the Kita Daito Board of Education had a quiet memorial for a person that none of them knew but cared a great deal for.
