		Kitakyushu was created in 1963 from the five smaller cities of Kokura (小倉), Moji (門司), Tobata (戸畑), Wakamatsu (若松) and Yahata (八幡), and it retains this sense of being a country area with much diversity and beautiful nature, despite its reputation as a steel town.
		Kokura, the heart of Kitakyushu, is an ancient feudal castle town guarding the Straits of Shimonoseki.
		The New Kitakyushu Airport (新北九州空港 Shin Kitakyūshū Kūkō) [2], built on reclaimed land offshore in Suo nada, the most westerly part of the Seto Inland Sea, opened its doors in March of 2006.

	Port of Tacoma - About Us
		On July 5, 1984, the Port of Tacoma established a sister port relationship with the Port of Kitakyushu.
		In 1989, as part of a sister port gift exchange, the Port of Tacoma presented an Indian totem pole to the Port Kitakyushu, and the Port of Kitakyushu gave the Port of Tacoma a stainless steel monument that is displayed on Tacoma's waterfront.
		Today, the port city on the island of Kyushu serves as the center of industry, economy and culture for its one million residents and the rest of Western Japan.
