And Battle Royale's Kitano handles a classroom of what he feels to be spoiled children by setting them at each other's throats.
The movie tells the story of one such class, which is bused to a deserted island under the supervision of Kitano (Takeshi Kitano), a teacher of theirs from two years before and now, apparently, one of the leaders of the Battle Royale project.
Battle Royale is in part wish fulfillment for adults who are fed up with, and maybe a little afraid of, the younger generation.

Granted, a lot of what Kitano tells the class is expository in nature - you would expect them to know the background and provisions of the BR act - but he also serves to bring home to the startled students the reality of their situation.
What makes the violence in Battle Royale truly shocking is that there are no throwaway characters in he film.
I have to admit that I won’t be rushing to see Battle Royale again in the near future.

Battle Royale - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Battle Royale was generally well received among critics who appreciated it as a satire of the Japanese education system and a metaphor for the perpetuation of violence in today's teenage generation.
Battle Royale is set in a dystopian future Japan (now called The Republic of Greater East Asia) in which a group of middle school students are chosen to participate in a death game after the government has passed an act to deal with overpopulation and unmotivated students.
Battle Royale was later adapted for the screen by Kenta Fukasaku and directed by his father, director Kinji Fukasaku, and premiered in Japan on December 16, 2000.

Battle Royale is not meant to trivialize school shootings and youth violence.
Battle Royale is simply an awesome movie about one of the most hypothetically traumatic things that could ever happen to teenagers.
Battle Royale, since it draws on fictitious characters and plot is far more interesting because it really makes you think about your own life.

Battle Royale Movie Review by Anthony Leong from MediaCircus.net
Under the provisions of the BR Act, a yearly Battle Royale is held in which a randomly chosen class of junior high school students are issued weapons and forced to play a twisted Darwinian game of survival in which there can be only one winner.
After a special screening by members of parliament and other government officials, "Battle Royale" was labeled 'crude and tasteless' and quickly became a battle cry for more government action on media violence, which up until then, had never been an issue.
Despite being branded the rarely-used R15 rating (restricting the film to those aged 15 and over) when it opened at the tail end of 2000, "Battle Royale" quickly became both a critical and box office success, both domestically and in other Asian film markets.

In a briefly interesting but predictable twist (as we get her surname early on) we have the daughter of sensei Kitano (Kitano Takeshi) from the first film, Shiori Kitano played by Ai Maeda.
Ai looks like a lazy character who I suppose is meant to be laid back and cool but is easily subject to her emotions that stem from her troubled relationship with her father.
Ai isn't too bad in her role but she spends far too much time brooding and keeping quiet for me to be able to give a proper summation of her performance.

Shiori Kitano was the daughter of Kitano, the teacher whom Shuya killed in the first Battle Royale.
What makes her stand out was how well she interacted with Shuya, as the moment a handful of the students were left in the Wild Seven stronghold, Shuya did not eradicate them and showed them mercy to the point that they realized that Shuya was fighting for a cause.
What compounded this was that given the fact that they work in pairs, the moment one of them died, the other would have his or her necklace promptly detonate.

The plot essentially focuses on two people: Shuya, who has grown weary of the death machine he has set in motion, but feels powerless to stop it; and Shiori (Ai Maeda), who goes into battle determined to kill Shuya and avenge her father, the teacher Kitano.
(Maeda is actually the sister of Aki Maeda, who played Shuya's co-survivor in the original, and whose character Kitano was fixated on because she resembled his daughter.
Aki makes a small appearance at the very end of the sequel.) Shuya, so pacifistic in the original, is meant, I think, as an object lesson in how a violent society can create its own menaces -- its own terrorists.
