 Sheena S. Iyengar - Research
According to Markus and Kitayama’s (1991) theory, Westerners (hypothesized to possess independent self-construals) perceive themselves as consisting of a unique set of attributes, which enable them to stand apart and to be separate from others in their environment.
By contrast, if, as Markus and Kitayama argue, interdependent-selves perceive themselves as striving for harmony and belongingness with others, then it may be hypothesized that such individuals will be particularly motivated by contexts which allow them both to be perceived as and to act as collective agents.
Consistent with Markus and Kitayama’s (1991) delineation of the motivating goals for independent-selves, much psychological theory and research supports the hypothesis that Westerners are most motivated in contexts allowing for the perception of choice, control, and self-determination.

Markus and Kitayama (1991b) have argued that the tendency toward self-enhancement has positive social and psychological consequences within a cultural system that is organized to foster and promote the independence and the uniqueness of the self.
Kitayama, Takagi, and Matsumoto (1995) reviewed 23 studies conducted in Japan on this topic and failed to find virtually any evidence for the self-serving pattern of attribution.
Kitayama and Karasawa (1995) found that the subjective well-being and physical health of Japanese persons can be reliably predicted by their appraisal of themselves as not having various negative qualities; but there was virtually no effect of their appraisal of themselves as having various positive qualities.

According to Markus and Kitayama’s (1991) theory, Westerners (hypothesized to possess independent self-construals) perceive themselves as consisting of a unique set of attributes, that enable them to stand apart and to be separate from others in their environments.
By contrast, according to Markus and Kitayama (1991), Easterners (hypothesized to possess interdependent self-construals) perceive themselves as being interconnected with and interrelated to others in their social contexts.
Thus, drawing upon differences between independent- and interdependent-selves articulated by Markus and Kitayama (1991), we predict that volitional choosers, with independent-selves, will exhibit the same low level of commitment to activities that are chosen by others--either ingroup or outgroup members.

Kitayama, Markus, Tummala, Kzrokawa, and Kato (1990) examined this idea in a study requiring similarity judgments between self and other.
In a more recent study Kitayama and Markus (1990) further tested whether this theoretical dimension of emotion also underlies and even determines how frequently people may experience various emotions and whether the frequency of emotional experience varies with their dominant construal of self as independent or interdependent.
Kitayama and Markus (1990) first sampled three emotions common in Japanese culture that were expected to fall under one of the five types theoretically derived from the current analysis.
