TeeVee Archive: Kitchen Confidential: A Matter of Taste
Same goes for Kitchen Confidential, Fox’s new culinary sitcom; whether you clamor for more or spit it out depends entirely on your taste in comedy.
Kitchen Confidential moves with the blistering pace of classic screwball comedy, with visual, verbal, and auditory gags flying from every direction.
Kitchen Confidential’s terrific cast deserves the lion’s share of the credit for the show’s graces.

Kitchen Confidential: Dinner Date With Death - TV Squad
Prison, like the kitchen, is an all male environment and the "classic psychology" of men who are without or denied the company of women is that they "do it" with each other.
But, outside of the kitchen, in an environment where there are women, the youngest chef is seen seated next to a woman on a bench in the restaurant.
In fact, the whole point of the second episode (Larroquette was presented merely as a distraction for the action in the Kitchen) from the kitchen IMHO) was to establish, literally, that the youngest chef is at the bottom of the "pecking order", as it were.

12:14 PM PT As "Kitchen Confidential" has only aired three episodes, none of them to much of an audience, you'd be forgiven for thinking that FOX had given up on the show, network protestations to the contrary aside.
The first episode back for "Kitchen Confidential" will be one featuring star Bradley Cooper's former "Alias" co-star, Michael Vartan.
"Kitchen Confidential" has struggled in the Nielsens during its brief time on the air.

Kitchen Confidential is for diners who believe that their sublime sliver of seared foie gras, topped with an ethereal buckwheat blini and a drizzle of piquant huckleberry sauce, was created by a culinary artist of the highest order, a sensitive, highly refined executive chef.
More likely, writes Anthony Bourdain, that elegant three-star concoction is the collaborative effort of a team of "wacked-out moral degenerates, dope fiends, refugees, a thuggish assortment of drunks, sneak thieves, sluts and psychopaths," in all likelihood pierced or tattooed and incapable of uttering a sentence without an expletive or a foreign phrase.
Both happens a lot in the book but it all helps convey the gristy salty experience it must be to stand with a kitchen akin a bedlam and roomful of people waiting for the soufflé that just collapsed.

In Kitchen Confidential, he expanded that appetizer into a deliciously funny, delectable shocking banquet that lays out his 25 years of sex, drugs, and haute cuisine.
From his first oyster in the Gironde to the kitchen of the Rainbow Room atop Rockefeller Center, from the restaurants of Tokyo to the drug dealers of the East Village, from the mobsters to the rats, Bourdain's brilliantly written, wild-but-true tales make the belly ache with laughter.
Bourdain’s prose is utterly riveting, swaggering with stylish machismo and a precise ear for kitchen patois.

Out of the blue, Jack is offered an opportunity to get back in the game as head chef at a top New York restaurant.
There's just one problem: the owner gives Jack just 48 hours to fully staff his kitchen and prepare to dazzle over 300 customers -- including the food critic for the New York Times (who also happens to be a jilted ex).
"Kitchen Confidential" is based on renowned chef Anthony Bourdain's best-selling autobiography.

His fast-lane personality and glee in recounting sophomoric kitchen pranks might be unbearable were it not for two things: Bourdain is as unsparingly acerbic with himself as he is with others, and he exhibits a sincere and profound love of good food.
He suggests that restaurant food is better during the weekdays when a chef is preparing food for what he believes to be his regular customers, whereas weekend food is for tourists and has to be rushed by the nature of the crowds.

Fox's Kitchen Confidential has no story and only glimmers of the sex-drugs-rock'n roll excess of the book, thanks partly to the severe limitations of a prime-time slot on a national network TV channel.

Their goal is to achieve what countless naysayers and years of experience have told them they can't: to re-create Splichal's dishes from Patina, his acclaimed L.A. restaurant, for Lufthansa's first- and business-class passengers.
If Splichal is satisfied with what he samples this morning, the cooks will carry his recipes back to their kitchens at airports all over the United States, and in a few weeks' time the results will land on the tray tables of the airline's premium-class passengers as they cross the Atlantic.
Despite the best intentions of everyone in the room, however, no one expects the food to taste as if it just emerged from the maestro's kitchen: The realities of airline catering mean that all hot meals served on commercial flights undergo a punishing odyssey of up to 22 hours from kitchen to plane.

Kitchen Confidential is as engrossing to read as any novel, and it's instructional, too.
