Kite aerial photography (KAP) is a hobby and a type of photography.
A small camera is suspended from a kite and used to take aerial photographs.
The example image of San Francisco after the 1906 San Francisco earthquake was taken by an early pioneer in KAP, George Lawrence using a large panoramic camera and stabilizing rig he designed.

Kite Aerial Photography for the Simple Minded
A small parafoil kite and a tiny digital camera suspended from the kite will let you join the ranks of kite photographers this weekend.
This kite is large enough to lift the camera and more than 500 feet of line in a gentle 10mph breeze and small enough to be easy to handle and stable with a single line.
Before launching the kite, I let out about 10 feet of line and tied the sling to the line at the suspension points, so that with a taut line, the camera would be suspended about 8 inches below the line pointing generally downward.

The kite should have a good wind range and be able to be lofted in the mornings when there is typically low wind speeds and later in the day when wind speed increases.
You would like the kite to have a high flight angle, meaning a lot less line is put out at a 60 degree angle to the ground compared to a low angle of 25 degrees.
Remember, you will be lofting the kite, mounting the camera rig to the line, paying out more line and then possibly use a remote control transmitter to adjust the camera and trip the camera shutter.

Kite aerial photographs are typically taken at heights of 50-150 m above the ground, and radio controls are often utilized to operate camera rigs while in flight.
KAP is capable of producing high-resolution, large-scale imagery in which dm-sized details are visible for ground features.
Furthermore, KAP is normally conducted with a much lower budget compared to conventional aerial photography from manned platforms or to the unmanned hot-air blimp of Marzolff and Ries (1997).

Kite aerial photography (KAP) is a form of remote sensing--collecting information about an object from a distance.
Aerial photography from kites is, in fact, one of the oldest forms of remote sensing of the Earth's surface.
Kites were utilized to take aerial photographs in the late 19th and early 20th centuries for many purposes--military reconnaissance, disaster assessment, scientific surveys, etc.

Relatively heavy kites don't fly well or are borderline stable; fixing a weight directly to a small, light kite effectively turns it into a heavy kite, creating its own set of problems.
To avoid adversely affecting stability the kite ought to be big enough so that the camera system only increases the kite's total weight by a small percentage, and then the location of the camera rig would have to determined experimentally.
