Kitgum district is located in northern Uganda and borders the Republic of the Sudan to the north, Kotido district to the east, Pader district in the south and Gulu district in the southwest.
Kitgum is generally flat with gentle slopes in some places like Aswa river valley to the west and Lamwo and Agoro mountain ranges to the northeast.
Kitgum is generally a Savannah woodland characterized by woody covers and grass layers.

It is a new district, having been carved out of the counties of Aruu and Agago formerly in Kitgum District in December 2001.
The district is bordered by Kitgum to the north, Kotido to the east, Lira to the south, Apac to the southwest and Gulu to the west.
Along with Gulu and Kitgum, Pader composes Acholiland, considered to be the historical homeland of the Acholi ethnic group, though other ethnic groups also live in the district.

 AEGiS-NV: Agency Takes AIDs War Kitgum Lodges
THE International Rescue Committee (IRC) is distributing free condoms to lodges in Kitgum town in a bid to stop the spread of AIDS, reports Wokarach-Oboi.
IRC's HIV/AIDS programme assistant Esther Opoka said the distribution of free condoms to the lodges should not be seen as encouraging immorality in society but rather the choice between life and death.
Opoka said the distribution is being done in conjunction with the Kitgum district directorate of health services.The HIV/AIDS prevalence rate in Kitgum district is 9 percent, three points higher than the national average of 6 percent.

Kitgum, will be the focus of a major investment over the coming year to provide health services, education, safe water, shelter and protection to children and women living in camps for "Internally Displaced People" ("IDPs") and to its child "night commuters".
Less than half of the population in Kitgum has access to basic health services within five kilometres walking distance, and that the current doctor/population ratio is 1 to 33,000 while the nurse/population ratio is 1 to 6,800 and the midwife/population ratio is 1 to 7,443.
Funding is now agreed and THF will visit Kitgum with UNICEF to mark the initiation of the programme and to work on ensuring the programme has a lasting impact in late July.

Acayo – or Agnes - Kony, 21, was taken from Primary School in Kitgum aged 13 and given as a ’wife’ to one of the commanders.
Eight years later, she was rescued during a government army offensive, and taken to a rehabilitation centre in Kitgum, where she was counselled by a priest on a routine visit.
The priest was struck by her sense of hopelessness and referred her to the CMS-backed cross project in the grounds of the Kitgum Diocesan Headquarters.

THE HIV/AIDS prevalence rate in Kitgum district stands at 9% against the national average of 6%.
Kitgum chairman Nahaman Ojwee said this was due to the insecurity in the district.

In the most recent attack, a group of LRA rebels targeted Oxford College secondary school in the northern town of Kitgum in the early hours of the morning.
Kitgum residents said the rebels were in the town for four hours from about 0100 but the Ugandan army did not respond with any firepower.

 Uganda: humanitarian situation remains difficult
In view of the escalation of the conflict earlier this year and an assessment confirming the scale of the emergency in the districts of Gulu, Kitgum, Lira, Soroti, and Kaberamaido, the ICRC resumed its operations outside Kampala focusing on protecting and assisting the victims of the conflict.
