A founder of Kitt Peak National Observatory died Friday, leaving colleagues lamenting the loss but grateful for a long track record of contributions in the field of astrophysics.
The telescope was rededicated as the McMath-Pierce Solar Telescope in 1992, on its 30th anniversary, in recognition of Pierce's contributions.
He is survived by a daughter, Barbara Orville, College Station, Texas, and a son, Ross, who lives in Irvine, Calif. Griffin-Pierce said all three of her husband's children, from a previous marriage, pursued some form of science.
