Kittanning, the Indian town that was thus so tragically destroyed, was for many years a great center among the Indians west of the Alleghenies.
In the earlier years after the first settlement of Kittanning by the whites, the facilities for crossing the river were by skiffs and flatboats, when the water was too high for fording, which were rowed or poled for one side to the other.
Kittanning's first fire company was formed at a meeting held in the courthouse in 1826, and the following year the borough purchased a hand fire engine for $76.65, also erected a frame house for it at a cost of $60, on the east side of Jefferson, below Market Street.

 Kittanning marks 250th anniversary of raid - Pittsburgh Tribune-Review
The Kittanning Medal, cast in the expedition's honor by the City of Philadelphia, is considered the first American military medal ever awarded.
To commemorate the historical expedition, the re-enactors trekked as much of the original route as they could, camped along the way, educated the public they encountered and re-created the Battle of Kittanning at the Armstrong County Hunting and Fishing Club.
The public is invited to participate in the Armstrong Battalion's march into Kittanning, as well as the battle re-enactment.

One of the displays was the Kittanning, Pennsylvania medal, in sliver, in copper perfect impression and in copper after the dies cracked.
It improved the spirits of the settlers, and the Delaware Indians abandoned their settlement at Kittanning, retiring to the protection of the French Forts, and to less exposed towns on the Beaver River and western settlements.

Marching by various routes, three hundred men of Armstrong's six garrisons assembled at Fort Shirley, the most advanced of the forts; and on Monday, August 30, the main body of troops set out from this place, preceded by an advance party which they overtook at the Allegheny Mountain on Friday, September 3.
By Monday, September 6, the expedition, still undiscovered by the Indians, reached a point in present Cambria County about fifty miles from Kittanning.
