OLYMPIA — On Monday (Aug. 16) Kittitas County becomes the 21st county in the state to be quarantined for the apple maggot, a major fruit pest that destroys apple, crabapple, cherry crops, and native hawthorn trees.
Aggressive actions are underway in Kittitas County to ensure homeowners with backyard fruit trees, particularly those close to commercial orchards, control apple maggot and other horticultural pests and diseases on their property.
A six square-mile area in the southeast corner of the county, isolated geographically and biologically from potential infestation by natural barriers, is exempted from the quarantine.

A third major wind farm is proposed for central Washington’s Kittitas County, raising the county’s announced potential wind capacity to more than 525 megawatts.
EFSEC in early May determined the proposal didn’t comply with Kittitas County regulations for wind farms, and it directed Zilkha "to make the necessary application for change in, or permission under, the Kittitas County land use plans or zoning ordinances, and make all reasonable efforts to resolve the noncompliance," according to the May 7 order.
Kittitas County will likely schedule a public hearing on the Zilkha application after the draft EIS is finished, county planner Clay White told Con.WEB.
