Kittitas County orchardists are asking Washington States officials to develop new rules for quarantine standards--rules that could have far-reaching effect.
Kittitas County is estimated to have about 1,000 to 1,200 acres of apples, representing a farm-gate value of around $6 million.
During the March hearing, Kittitas County apple growers and two Selah fruit-packing houses testified, urging state officials to modify the proposed quarantine boundaries, update quarantine rules, and designate Kittitas County as an "area of low pest prevalence," a standard recently approved by the North American Plant Protection Organization.

The northern end of the county had more settlers and therefore more taxable property.  Residents of the northern area were loathe to see their tax dollars heading south.
The question of whether or not the county seat should be moved from Yakima City to Ellensburg was key to the 1880 election. George Taylor of Selah ran as the Democratic candidate for the state legislature, and Ellensburg founder John Shoudy (1842-1901) ran as the Republican candidate.
