Joseph Joachim was born in Kittsee (Kopčany / Köpcsény), near Bratislava and Eisenstadt, in today's Burgenland area of Austria.
At the time, Kittsee was part of the Esterhazy holdings in Hungary, and Joachim is considered to be Hungarian.
In 1833 his family moved to Pest, where he studied violin with Stanislaus Serwaczynski, the concertmaster of the opera in Pest.

KITTSEE, Austria, Sept 22 (AFP) - Austria, Hungary, Slovakia and the Czech Republic on Monday unveiled plans here to create a regional cooperation zone in the heart of central Europe in 2005.
They signed their declaration of intent in a hall dominated by portraits of former Austro-Hungarian emperor Franz-Joseph and his wife Elisabeth in Kittsee, which lies on the border between Austria and Slovakia and only a few kilometres (miles) from Hungary.
Kittsee itself used to belong to Hungary's princely Batthyany family and the Burgenland promise was part of Hungary until 1920.

After seven years, the best average results were obtained from apricots grafted on Green Gage (56.80% survived), and the worst, from cultivars grafted on St. Julien (37.50% survived).
When the cultivars were studied separately on all rootstocks, F. Kittsee showed the best vitality (69.60 % trees alive) and K'sna Dryanovska showed the worst (33.30%).
The yields varied with cultivars, ranging from 39.6kg/tree of F. Kittsee to 21.1kg/tree of Nugget and K'sna Dryanovska.

Two years ago, two new border crossings were opened at Austria's Kittsee to supplement the lone crossing at Berg [both are several kilometres south of Berg, which is just west of Bratislava.

The ensemble for which they are written (flute, violin and cello) differs from the more usual wind groups (known as Harmonie) that were favored for providing outdoor entertainment during late eighteenth and early nineteenth century Vienna.
The fact that these arrangements were originally performed by an ensemble that was far more likely to have entertained indoors is undoubtedly reflected in this recording which was made at the late eighteenth century Schloss Kittsee in Austria.
The venue was specially chosen as it was in this type of private concert hall that these arrangements would have first been heard.
