 Navy Times - Envoy assures Japan of carrier’s safety
Ambassador Thomas Schieffer met with Taro Aso to deliver a statement of the U.S.’s commitment to “maintaining the highest level of safety” on Washington’s nine Nimitz-Class aircraft carriers, one of which is slated to replace the non-nuclear Kitty Hawk at the Yokosuka naval base outside Tokyo in 2008.
Schieffer also told Aso that replacing the Kitty Hawk with the nuclear-powered George Washington significantly improves the U.S.’s “ability to contribute to the defense of Japan, and to protect security interests of the U.S. and its allies in the region,” according to a statement by the U.S. Embassy.
The new carrier would arrive in Japan in 2008, when the Kitty Hawk is scheduled to return to the United States and be decommissioned.
