With the upsurge of copper prices in the 1950’s Kitwe developed from a small township to the second largest city in Zambia, obtaining city status in 1966.
Kitwe is largely undeveloped as a tourist town, due to the focus on mining and industry, but nonetheless is blessed with beautiful scenery and has two big rivers within its boundaries.

Kitwe, December 12th 2005 - The Zambia anti poverty campaign held a pre World Trade Organisation (WTO) interfaith walk to voice their demands for trade justice ahead of the WTO Ministerial meeting.
The March was held in Kitwe on the copperbelt province of Zambia, where the effects of trade liberalisation have impacted greatly on the poverty of the town.
The March which started from the City Square, painted Kitwe streets white as participants clad in white T-shirts, white wrist bands and white head scarves with the Global Call to Action Against Poverty (GCAP) stamp on them, marched through the town with scores of onlookers cheering their support.
