Several complex variables - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
With work of Friedrich Hartogs, and of Kiyoshi Oka in the 1930s, a general theory began to emerge; others working in the area at the time were Heinrich Behnke, Peter Thullen and Karl Stein.
In fact it was the need to put (in particular) the work of Oka on a clearer basis that led quickly to the consistent use of sheaves for the formulation of the theory (with major repercussions for algebraic geometry, in particular from Grauert's work).
From this point onwards there was a foundational theory, which could be applied to analytic geometry (a name adopted, confusingly, for the geometry of zeroes of analytic functions — this is not the analytic geometry learned at school), automorphic forms of several variables, and partial differential equations.

The Independent, November 28, 2001 - Sludge proponents spread the word in Warkworth
Kiyoshi Oka, a Senior Water Pollution Control Engineer with the City of Toronto, said the sewage from 2.2 million residents in his city is processed in four wastewater treatment plants.
The Ashbridges Bay plant, from which biosolids are hauled to farm fields in Northumberland, is the largest facility, he said.
Oka said Toronto has invested about $90 million dollars in biosolids diversion programs since 1996, including $20 million in a "biofilter and odour control" project.

Humanure or Human Waste Used as a "fertilizer"
Oka says sewage biosolids are one of the most studied materials around.
And many people would be surprised, were they to read the fine print on their fertilizer boxes, that they are already using pellets made from sewage sludge.
Oka, like most people familiar with sludge treatment, insists there is no health or environmental risk in sprinkling the sludge-based composts and fertilizers on lawns and gardens as long as they meet limits that have been set for pathogens and heavy metals.

Natural Life Magazine #81 - Sludge Pellets Ignite in Farm Field   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-08-09)
Sewage sludge pellets tend to be self-heating, according to reports from the US National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) and may constitute a fire and explosion risk according to the National Occupational Health and Safety Association.
Kiyoshi Oka, of Toronto’s Works Department, confirmed that the pellets had been heating up in the storage silo at the Ashbridges Bay Treatment Plant on Toronto’s lakeshore and that the City staff had been forced to remove the pellets from the storage silo to prevent an explosion or fire.
The sewage sludge pellets are allegedly being sold to farmers as a fertilizer called “Soil Seed” by a company called US Filter Canada, which is being paid by the City of Toronto to dispose of the pellets.

As recently as February 2002, Azurix and Terratec were facing two charges under the Environmental Protection Act for applying sludge in disregard to the required setback distances, thus causing nearby residents to be affected by the odours–not to mention the enjoyment of their properties.
Kiyoshi Oka, a Senior Water Pollution Control Engineer for Toronto, claims that the City tests for disease causing pathogens "seven days a week".
The Ontario MOE also claims that there is no reason to worry about any health impacts because the biosolids are properly treated before spreading.
