Olympia was (and is) situated in a rural location, in a valley at the base of Kronos hill (named for the father of Zeus), bordered by the Kladeos river on the west and the Alpheios river along the south.
In AD 267 the invasions of barbarian tribes prompted the fortification of the sanctuary by using rubble from monuments damaged in the earthquakes of the 3rd century.
The flooding from both rivers (Kladeos to the west and Alpheios along the south) deposited much silt until the site became completely buried to an average depth of 4 meters.

Olympia is situated in a fertile, grassy plain on the north bank of the broad river Alpheios, just to the east of its confluence with the Kladeos, which rushes down to meet it from the mountains of Elis.
In ancient times the area was pleasantly shaded with plane and olive trees, white poplars and even palm-trees, while vines and flowering shrubs grew thickly beneath them.
