KLAGENFURT (Slovene, Celovec), the capital of the Austrian auchy of Carinthia, 212 m.
During the Middle Ages Klagenfurt became the property of the crown, but by a patent of Maximilian I. of the 24th of April 1518, it was conceded to the Carin-thian estates, and has since then taken the place of St Veit as capital of Carinthia.
In 1535, 1636, 1723 and 1796 Klagenfurt suffered from destructive fires, and in 1690 from the effects of an earthquake.

Klagenfurt (Slovenian Celovec) is the capital of the federal state of Carinthia (German Kärnten; Slovenian Koróška), in Austria, on the Glan river.
Notable landmarks include the Wörthersee, the warmest European Alpine lake, the Lindwurm Brunnen (a lindorm fountain), and nearby Hochosterwitz Castle, an impressively fortified castle on a high hill that can only be reached by an ascending spiral path which is fortified with a series of gates.
