The state of crustal stress in the Klamath Mountains is poorly defined, due to the near absence of recorded seismicity prior to 1983, when the USBR monitoring effort began (Zoback and Zoback, 1980; USBR, 1984a).
Trinity Dam is located on the eastern Klamath plate, the oldest and easternmost of four eastward-dipping thrust sheets that comprise the Klamath Mountains province.
Rocks of the eastern Klamath plate are Devonian to Jurassic metavolcanic and metasedimentary rocks that are underlain by widespread sheets of ultramafic rocks, and have been intruded by Jurassic to Cretaceous granitic stocks and batholiths.

The Klamath Mountains are a mountain range in northwest California and southwest Oregon, the highest peaks being Mount Eddy (2744m / 9002') in Trinity County, California, and Mount Ashland (2296m / 7533') in Jackson County, Oregon.
They have a very varied geology, with substantial areas of serpentine and marble, and a climate characterised by cold winters with very heavy snowfall, and warm summers with limited rainfall.
The northernmost range of the Klamath Mountains are known as the Siskiyou Mountains.

The Klamath River, approximately 250 mi (400 km) long, is a major river of the Pacific coast in southern Oregon and northern California in the United States.
Below Klamath Falls, the water of the river, along with that of the nearby Lost River, is extensively diverted for irrigation within the 230,000 acre (930 km²) federal Klamath Irrigation Project.Much of the lower course of the river in California is within the Klamath National Forest.
A separate controversy on the river surrounds the removal of water from Upper Klamath Lake for irrigated agriculture, which was temporarily halted in 2001 to protect endangered salmon and lake fish during a record-breaking drought.

The Klamath Economic Zone, which includes the Klamath Ecoregion as well as the Rogue River drainage to the north, is managed as one unit for purposes of allocating ocean salmon harvesting since stocks from these rivers are found together in the ocean fishery.
A principal feature of the Klamath Mountains is the presence of "peneplains" which are elevated land masses with flattish or gently rounded summits with an approximate accordance in the altitudes of even-crested ridges, given the appearance of a dissected plateau.
The Klamath Ecoregion is somewhat unique in that the European invasions of the last 500 years came from quite different directions: the Russians moving across the Bering Strait and down the coast, the Spanish working their way up California from Mexico, and the Americans moving across the continent from the east.
