 World War II
The revisionist histories of the 1960s and '70s saw Nazi ideology as having just a largely functional role in the running of the Third Reich; another sign that they are being displaced by a new mainstream interpretation of World War II is the publication of Richard Bessel's Nazism and War (Modern Library, $22.95).
Bessel is a well-regarded British scholar of the Third Reich who -- like Omer Bartov, Ian Kershaw, Gerhard Weinberg, Klaus Hildebrand and others -- is restoring Hitler's malignant ideology to its central place in the history of the war.
Bessel's well-crafted essays drive home the point that Nazism was not some opiate of the masses but an important unifying force for the German people -- and a vital guide to policy for their leaders.

Klaus Barbie, "the Butcher of Lyon", captured and deported 44 Jewish children hidden in the village of Izieu, killed Resistance leader Jean Moulin, and was in total responsible for the deportation of 7,500 people, 4,342 murders, and the arrest and torture of 14,311 resistance fighters were in some way attributed to his actions or commands.
Klaus Barbie, known as "the Butcher of Lyon" for his role at the head of the Gestapo, was protected from 1945 to 1955 by the MI-5 and the CIA, before fleeing to South America where he had a hand in Luis García Meza Tejada's 1980 Cocaine Coup in Bolivia.
Barbie was finally arrested in 1983 and sentenced to life imprisonment for crimes against humanity in 1987.

Identified with the "right" side were the philosopher Ernst Nolte, the journalist Joachim Fest, and the historians Andreas Hillgruber, Klaus Hildebrand, Rainer Zitelmann, Hagen Schulze, and Michael Stürmer.
The label "right" for this group is not entirely accurate because while Hildebrand and Fest were close supporters of Nolte, both Hillgruber and Stürmer kept their distance from him.
