Klaus Schulze - Moondawn Review - sputnikmusic
Klaus Schulze has often emphasised the sound in his works, using samples, synthesizers, spoken word; anything to enhance the sound of the work.
Schulze’s panache with the drums are brought to light, with both complexity and creativity, showing that he is easily on par with other more celebrated drummers of the time.
This is partly due to Klaus Schulze’s massive impact on the electronic music world, with his improvisational approach to composing, paving the way for modern electronic music makers.

Eventually, drums join in (don't forget that Klaus was originally an avantgarde drummer!), then the astral bubbly synths and the heavenly background Mellotrons (I may be wrong in defining the instruments, forgive me in advance) complete the establishing of the whole pattern.
Schulze himself was saying that the idea of stuff like 'Crystal Lake' would be to help the listener realize his conception of 'air castles', create and materialize a whole new world of fantasy while the music is playing.
Schulze gets out a beautiful, crystal clear 'chiming' tone out of his synthesizers and again, slowly 'builds up' the atmosphere based on this delicate, delicious even chiming, adding layer after layer of synthesizer patterns until the 'tune' adds enough majesty and power to really give you visions of a majestic castle on a crystal lake.

 AmbientMusicGuide.com - Klaus Schulze
Multi-instrumentalist Klaus Schulze was part of the Krautrock phenomenon of the late 60's and 70's and alongside a handful of other German acts he is a pivotal figure in the development of modern electronic music.
But to this day Schulze remains active and creative, and he is one of the very few who has collaborated with new-generation ambient techno figures such as Pete Namlook.
Schulze's early career included a brief stint as drummer with Tangerine Dream and the several noisy years with the band Ash Ra Tempel which he formed with Manuel Gottsching.

Klaus Schulze's collaboration with keyboard player Andreas Grosser throughout Babel is slightly different from his usual synthesized tinkering.
Schulze's dabbling leads to some well-established electronic mysticism, musically addressing the concept of the mighty tower that was said to be erected in order to bring Noah's people closer to heaven.
Like most of Schulze's material, the concept is wonderfully developed through drifting textures and directed pulses, as excerpts such as "Heaven Under Feet," First Clouds," and the 14-minute "Immuring Into Insanity" paint a vivid portrait of the sky and the earth through both delicate and strong rhythms.

In this first effort Klaus SCHULZE put the stress on electric organ parts, very intense, often based on repetitive and continuous sound forms.
SCHULZE abandons the use of modified organ sounds to concentrate on the powerful capacities of composition offered by the analogical keyboards.
Klaus SCHULZE has always been found of classical music, he recorded two others great albums at the end of the seventies with the help of string instruments, an orchestra in the fantastic “X” and a cello in the soundtrack “Dune” (taken from the Science Fiction novel written by Frank Herbert).

By the late '80s, Schulze had dusted off the analogue synths that he still had, begged his friends for the ones he gave away ("many of them didn't want to give them back, of course"), and set about creating the hybrid analogue/digital studio that he favours today.
Schulze is not a fan of many recent synthesizers, and lays the blame for the similarity of much recent music at technology's door: "I loved the Roland JD800 because it operated very much like an analogue synth.
Schulze's extensive use of effects boxes lends his music a kind of pulsating, random phase interference, adding to the depth and movement of the sound.

On Volume 1, Schulze's 45-minute keyboard suite called "Yen" is broken up into ten different subtitles, but the songs are all fused together by way of single-toned electronic streams and the faint pulsations of analog synthesizer riffs.
The "Fire-Riser" portion of this track is most entertaining, as Schulze demonstrates his articulation and his wise use of tonal blending.
While Schulze's music remains on the more ambient, atmospheric side of electronic keyboard music (as opposed to Rick Wakeman's style), he still manages to muster up enough intrigue to keep his music listenable.

As both a solo artist and as a member of groups including Tangerine Dream and Ash Ra Tempel, Klaus Schulze emerged among the founding fathers of contemporary electronic music, his epic, meditative soundscapes a key influence on the subsequent rise of the new age aesthetic.
Born in Berlin on August 4, 1947, Schulze began his performing career during the 1960s, playing guitar, bass and drums in a variety of local bands; by 1969, he was drumming in Tangerine Dream, appearing a year later on their debut LP Electronic Meditation.
