Klaus Tennstedt's recordings with the Berlin Philharmonic of the great Wagner overtures and preludes is quite good.

Klaus Tennstedt, who died in 1998, was an artist whose unpredictability and profound insecurity sometimes overshadowed his phenomenal gifts.
Tennstedt manages to maintain this colossal level of tension and emotion throughout the cycle and it is impossible to listen without being struck by his mastery of each work.
This set features recordings Tennstedt made over a number of years and some may prefer his later recordings of the 1st (with the Chicago Symphony) and the 5th, both recorded in concert near the end of his all too short career but the LPO performances are themselves well worth listening too.

Tennstedt still has a legion of admirers for whom he can seemingly do no wrong and though I've never counted myself among them I have always admired these two recordings in spite of reservations relating to those characteristics I have outlined and which I will come to.
The rest of the symphony under Tennstedt works much better, though it cannot be said too often that an account of the Third where the first movement doesn't convince is a Third with one hand tied behind it's back.
Tennstedt has slipped back into his old Third Symphony ways here as he seems determined not to break the mood he has established in the third movement whereas I'm convinced that is exactly what Mahler wants the conductor to do.

 Classical Net Review - Beethoven - Symphonies #1 & 5, Egmont
Although the intensity that Tennstedt displays in the composer's Fifth is kept in check, the tension is never allowed to abate.
In the third movement, Tennstedt found a certain sense of formal rhythm that is in perfect balance with the drive and impetus that he generates in the fourth.
Although at times Tennstedt seems to be in danger of overstepping the symphonic limits of its ebullience, he still manages to maintain a balance between the timbre of his interpretation and the natural essence of the music.

Fanfare Magazine Archive of Classical Music CD Reviews: MAHLER: Symphony No. 5... (Klaus Tennstedt)   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-04)
This “double forte” release marks the midway point in this series of reissues of Mahler Symphonies conducted by Klaus Tennstedt.
True, there is some less than stellar playing, particularly in the second movement, and rhythmically the Scherzo is all over the place; but what he lacks in refinement is more than compensated for by Tennstedt’s emotional honesty and commitment—his Adagietto is one of the most eloquent on disc.
Tennstedt himself couldn’t better his first effort, though he recorded this Symphony ten years later with the same orchestra.

The only thing I would like to say is that I have listened to the Bernstein/Dieskau, Joachum/Merriman/Haefliger, Walter/Ferrier recordings of the same work (a personal favourite), but for me Tennstedt's version surpasses them all in many individual respects and also as a whole.
