Iceland Today - What's on in Iceland - Iceland Lake Disappearing Into New Crack in Earth
Kleifarvatn is draining at about one centimeter (one-third of an inch) a day, according to Clifton.
Describing herself as a "walking pencil," because her treks are all mapped by global positioning system (GPS) technology, she investigates open cracks, torn vegetation, rock falls, sinkholes, and other disturbances and tries to determine what caused them.
The earthquake thought to be responsible for the fissure at Lake Kleifarvatn occurred last year on June 17, about 80 kilometers (49 miles) east in the South Icelandic seismic zone.

Coseismic stress changes and crustal deformation on the Reykjanes Peninsula due to triggered earthquakes on 17 June 2000
This event does not appear to have triggered as much activity on the Reykjanes Peninsula as the 17 June main shock, although the epicenter was closer.
Crustal deformation signals due to the June 2000 earthquakes on the Reykjanes Peninsula were observed with campaign and continuous GPS and synthetic aperture radar interferometry, with the largest coseismic deformation signal near lake Kleifarvatn.
Static Coulomb failure stress change calculations indicate that the event at Kleifarvatn increased the Coulomb stress at the hypocenter of the Núpshlídarháls event by 0.1–0.2 MPa as well as loading the Hvalhnúkur fault.

The water level in this lake has always been very sensitive to climate changes and has been used as a local rain gauge.
Since June 17, 2000 the water level in Kleifarvatn has been lowering at an average rate of 1.3 cm/day.

Iceland Lake Disappearing Into New Crack in Earth
Summary Iceland is regularly stretched, split, and torn by violent earthquakes and haphazardly rebuilt by exploding volcanoes.
But residents are puzzled by the steady draining of Lake Kleifarvatn, which is disappearing into a long fissure created by an earthquake last summer.
When she arrived she found a fissure—about a foot wide and 400 meters (1,280 feet) long—that led directly into Lake Kleifarvatn and disappeared beneath the water.
