Expert on bisexuality to speak at UNT on March 9
He is the inventor of the Klein Sexual Orientation Grid which helps define who bisexuals are, and where they fit on the sexual orientation continuum.
Bisexuality is a sexual orientation characterized by aesthetic attraction, romantic love and sexual desire for both males and females.
Klein’s appearance at UNT is supported by DFW Bi-Net, the UNT Division of Equity and Diversity, UNT Study of Sexualities, and the UNT Ally program.

  Sexual orientation
Sexual orientation is the focus of a person's amorous or erotic desires, fantasies, and feelings, the gender(s) one is primarily "oriented" towards.
Sexual fetishism is usually considered orthogonal to the gender-based categories of sexual orientation listed above, though of course it may in some cases be an important part of a person's sexual identity and behavior.
In a sense, sexual orientation is a social construct, and a relatively new one.

Sexual orientation generally refers to feelings and self-concept; a person's sexual behavior may or may not reflect his/her sexual orientation.
For example, sexual abstinence is independent of sexual orientation in this sense, and thus one may speak of a heterosexual virgin or a homosexual celibate.
The term sexual preference was used in the late 20th century by gay rights advocates promoting the view that each person should have the right to seek out the partner they prefer, whether of the opposite sex or the same sex.

Sexual orientation - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Sexual orientation refers to the sex or gender of people who are the focus of a person's amorous or erotic desires, fantasies, and spontaneous feelings, the gender(s) toward which one is primarily "oriented".
Most specialists follow the general conclusion of Alfred Kinsey regarding the sexual continuum, according to which a minority of humans are exclusively homosexual or heterosexual, and that the majority are bisexual, that is, that the norm is to experience a mixture homoerotic and heteroerotic feelings, each kind to a different degree.
Because sexual orientation is complex and multi-dimensional, some academics and researchers (especially in Queer studies) have argued that sexual orientation is a completely historical and social construction.

Klein Grid factor analysis (Article text)
It was, accordingly, named "General Sexual Orientation." Factor 2 was associated with the three items relating to the sex one prefers to socialize with and the three items relating to emotional preference (at between 0.4 and 0.6 in all cases).
The fact that the Klein Grid factored in similar ways in both samples (for the first two factors) suggests that the grid appears to be an externally valid measure.
This suggests that in these samples, changes in sexual orientation are rare, or occurred before the 1-year horizon that respondents are asked to use in separating Present from Past preferences and behaviors.

On the Kinsey scale, sexual behavior is represented as a continuum from exclusively heterosexual to exclusively homosexual (see Figure 1.) For ease in quantifying behavior (for research purposes,) the scale has 7 equal, numbered intervals, but it is a contimuum and in-between points (such as 1.5 or 2.3) may be used.
Klein's research and the experience of many people indicates that sexual identity is fluid (at least for some people), and can change from one period of a person's life to another.

A person's sexual orientation is most often classified by the gender(s) one is "orientated" to, as:
As heterosexual men in the United States are still expected to refrain from engaging in sexual activity with other men, a free Roman male was expected not to be penetrated, with transgressors being similarly labelled as effeminate.
The traditional Western view that homosexuality was due to man's rebellious or fallen nature, or demonic temptation has given way to scientific explanations which regard homosexuality as natural.

The Klein Sexual Orientation Grid attempts to further measure sexual orientation by expanding upon the earlier Kinsey scale which only considers from 0 (exclusively heterosexual) to 6 (exclusively homosexual).
Because most people had been (and arguably still are) first exposed to sexuality with the binary of heterosexual or homosexual, Alfred Kinsey set his scale of sexual orientation with seven intervals, beginning at 0 with ‘Exclusively Heterosexual’ and concluding at 6 with ‘Exclusively Homosexual’.
By considering all of these other life factors, Klein's categorical scale offers much more in terms of understanding that sexual activities do not necessarily denote sexual orientation, and just because two people have the same sexual identity does not mean that they have the same sexual practices.

Early sexologists considered sexual object-choice to be a determinant of gender; being attracted to a man made one a woman and vice-versa.
Finding that 28% of women and 46% of men had responded erotically or were sexually active with both women and men, Kinsey's studies awakened other researchers and the American public to the prevalence of bisexuality and challenged the distinction psychoanalysts made between the normal and the pathological.
But his conception of human sexual behavior as a continuum from heterosexuality to homosexuality, rather than a dichotomy--what has become known as the Kinsey scale--has had a lasting influence on how sexuality is perceived.

The Klein Sexual Orientation Grid (KSOG) is a process for helping a person understand their sexual orientation in a more detailed and descriptive manner than previous methods.
Where a person may be positioned in the KSOG today may not necessarily be where they were in the past or where they would like to be “ideally” in the future.
The next step in developing one’s understanding of their sexual orientation is bridging the gap between one’s present positions in the KSOG and one’s “ideal” positions to enable the “future” and ”ideal” to be closely matched.
