Elisabeth von Arnim - LoveToKnow 1911
ELISABETH (BETTINA) VON ARNIM (1785-18J9), German authoress, sister of Klemens Brentano, was born at Frankforton-Main on the 4th of April 1785.
After being educated at a convent school in Fritzlar, she lived for a while with her grandmother, the novelist, Sophie Laroche (1731-1807), at Offenbach, and from 1803 to 1806 with her brother-in-law, Friedrich von Savigny, the famous jurist, at Marburg.
Equally fantastic is her correspondence Die Giinderode (1840), with her unhappy friend, the poet, Karoline von Giinderode (1780-1806), who committed suicide, and that with her brother Klemens Brentano, under the title Klemens Brentanos Friihlingskranz (1844).

Poets involved in Romanticism both in England and in Germany were greatly influenced by the ballad revival, as seen in, for example, the Lyrical Ballads (1798) of English poets Wordsworth and Coleridge.
Des Knaben Wunderhorn/The Boy’s Magic Horn (1805–08), a collection edited by German writers Klemens Brentano and Achim von Arnim, was a major influence on 19th-century German poetry.
The ballad form was adapted in ‘broadsheets’ (so called because they were printed on large sheets of paper), with a satirical or political motive, and in the ‘hanging’ ballads purporting to come from condemned criminals.

At about this time, Klemens Brentano, a well-known poet, visited Anne Catherine, and took on the task of recording her visions.
It is this that makes the Gibson film disturbing, because it is being promoted as based on the Gospels, with only a nagging little footnote reminder that it is also based on the visions of a German nun who may have been illiterate.
Despite the fact that Brentano had his version approved by Emmerich, we have no way of knowing whether she simply accepted his way of recording them, or even if he may have done a bit more editing when preparing them for publication after her death.

From 1818 until Emmerich?s death, Brentano sat frequently by her bedside and took down the words Catherine spoke during her ecstatic transports.
In Germany experts went to work on Brentano?s papers and library and eventually came to the conclusion that only a small portion of what had been published could safely be attributed to Catherine.
We are almost compelled to draw the conclusion that although the texts could be something more, in their present form they are perhaps best treated as devout fiction or, to put it more harshly, as well-intentioned frauds.
