The clarinet was one of the chief virtuoso solo instruments in many klezmer bands, but its virtual hegemony as the solo instrument most frequently identified with the typical timbres, flourishes and special effects of the klezmer style is probably more of a phenomenon of the American immigrant experience.

Klezmer bands are entertainers--at a simkha they play everything the celebrants want to hear, from rock 'n' roll to jazz to Israeli to the shmalzy old stuff.
American klezmer of the early part of the twentieth century sounds different from klezmer today (Henry Sapoznik's Dave Tarras retrospective, is a wonderful place to follow the changes just in the first half of this century), and both are different from European and Israeli versions.
Public klezmer concerts are also a new phenomenon, since the revival, and are themselves both demonstrations of the broadness of a band's chops, and teach-ins about a Jewish past that is foreign to most of the audience--including those who happen to be Jewish.
