Klimov M-105 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Klimov M-105 is a V-12 liquid-cooled piston aircraft engine used by Soviet aircraft during World War II.
During the war, Klimov's engines were redesignated from "M" (for "motor," engine) to "VK" for the lead designer's initials.
In spite of Klimov's concerns about decreased service life, the engine was pressed into production at the insistence of Yakovlev.

Yakovlev Yak-3 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A second Yak-1M prototype was constructed later that year, differing from the first aircraft in plywood instead of fabric covering of the rear fuselage, mastless radio antenna, reflector gunsight, and improved armor and engine cooling.
The first 197 Yak-3 were armed with a single 20 mm ShVAK cannon and one 12.7 mm UBS machine gun, with subsequent aircraft receiving a second UBS for a weight of fire of 2.72 kg (6.0 lb) per second using high-explosive ammunition.
In spite of excellent performance (720 km/h (447 mph) at 5,750 m (18,860 ft)), VK-107 was prone to overheating and it was decided to leave the engine for the better-suited Yak-9.

Yakovlev Yak-9 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Before starting the Yak-9, it was necessary to hand-crank a small cockpit-mounted oil pump 25 times to provide initial lubrication to the Klimov in-line vee engine, something that was not required for WWII German and western fighters equipped with forced-closed cycle lubrication systems.
Initially poor performance due to unreliable engine dramatically improved with adoption of Klimov M-106PV with water injection, with the aircraft reaching 13,500 m (44,300 ft) during testing.
The prototype's top speed of 700 km/h (435 mph) at 5,600 m (18,370 ft) was faster than any production fighter aircraft in the world at the time.

The Yak-3 was powered by a 970 kW (1,300 hp) Klimov V12 inline engine which gave it a top speed of 407 mph.
At least two of these aircraft are based in the United States, one in Santa Monica, California and the other in Maryland near Washington DC.

Two Yak-3s were experimentally fitted with the Klimov M-107 engine, with 1,500 horsepower, and at least one of the two was later fitted with the Klimov M-108 engine, with 1,550 horsepower.
As availability of the Klimov inline engine was good, and a parallel effort to fit the M-82 to a Lavochkin fighter was showing more promise, the radial-engined Yak never went beyond the experimental stage.
The Yak-9U was initially fitted with the Klimov M-107 engine, but problems with the engine led to the loss of the prototype in late February 1943.
