Kludge - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In modern computing terminology, a kludge is a method of solving a problem, doing a task, or fixing a system (whether hardware or software) that is inefficient, inelegant, or even unfathomable, but which nevertheless works.
To kludge around something is to avoid a bug or some difficult condition by building a kludge, perhaps relying on properties of the bug itself to assure proper operation.
Something might be a kludge if it fails in corner cases, but this is a less common sense as such situations are not expected to come up in general usage.

`Kludge' in Commonwealth hackish differs in meaning from `kluge' in that it lacks the positive senses; a kludge is something no Commonwealth hacker wants to be associated too closely with.
Raymond considers "kludge" an incorrect spelling of kluge, a term of the 1940s with the same general meaning and possibly inspired by the Kluge paper feeder, a "fiendishly complex assortment of cams, belts, and linkages...devilishly difficult to repair...but oh, so clever!"
A kludge originates because another, more elegant or appropriate solution is not currently possible (perhaps because of time constraints).

I had expected to be able to give you an exact origin for the term and to be able to say it is one of the very few words for which we know the author, the date and the source.
It has been described as a fiendishly complicated and clever device, which often broke down and was hard to repair, though it seems in reality to have been a relatively simple mechanism (leading to a suspicion that its complexity has been exaggerated in order to bolster a connection between the device and the word).
Others have said that the kludge spelling really derives from a Scots word for a toilet, cludgie, and was imported into America during World War Two through borrowing from British armed forces slang.
