Kmart Corp. executives said this week they have rarely encountered such aggressive tactics as Harvard and its lawyers have used to try to oust them from their 85,000-square-foot Big Kmart store on Western Avenue.
Kmart's presence could be in the way of the university's plans for a 200-acre science-oriented campus with housing and other commercial uses for the Allston campus and part of Brighton where Kmart is located.
Kmart declined to say what it is paying for the space but said that after being level for a long time, the cost, tied to inflation, recently went up.

Kmart Holding Corp. said yesterday that it is cutting about 200 jobs at its headquarters as part of ongoing streamlining efforts.
Kmart emerged from bankruptcy in May 2003 with about 1,500 stores -- 600 fewer than before, and has continued to pare down its workforce this year.
Kmart has greatly improved its financial picture since emerging from bankruptcy, but it has struggled to maintain sales in the face of heavy competition from Wal-Mart Stores Inc. and Target Corp.

Kmart is the second largest discount retailer in the United States, behind Wal-Mart, and is the largest retail bankruptcy ever in the U.S. This action, however, had been expected for weeks and was not a great surprise to analysts.
Kmart officials admit that the company has $1.6 billion in debt, but note that they just secured 2 billion in financing to cover this debt and expect to be out of bankruptcy within one year.
Kmart is, however, evaluating all of its locations with plans to close up to 500 unprofitable locations in addition to the 350 locations closed last year.

 Kmart files for bankruptcy, gets financing - Jan. 22, 2002
Kmart's bankruptcy filing, with $17 billion in assets, is the biggest ever for a U.S. retailer, according to Bankruptcydata.com.
Kmart, which has about $37 billion in annual revenue, said it had secured $2 billion in debtor financing to pay its $1.6 billion in debt and expected to emerge from bankruptcy in about a year.
Other alternatives for Kmart, analysts said, include possibly merging with Fleming to form a retail/grocery "supercenter" or being acquired by an overseas retailer such as Dutch supermarket chain Koninklijke Ahold NV or U.K. retailer Kingfisher.  Both are said to be looking for ways to expand in the United States.

Troy-based Kmart generated $4.8 billion in sales for the quarter that ended July 28, a 15 percent decrease from $5.7 billion in sales last year when the company lost $5 million, or 6 cents a share, for the quarter.
Other factors Kmart attributed to the sales drop were a reduction in newspaper advertising; the effect of unseasonably cool weather on sales of summer seasonal products such as lawn and garden merchandise; and a transition in apparel lines leading up to back-to-school product launches.
Continuing to slash costs, Kmart announced last week that the company was trimming its headquarters staff by more than 200 workers, a move that will be included in third-quarter results.

In the new design on view at the Troy store, Kmart has expanded its women's apparel department, changing it from a square-shaped layout to one that is more rectangular and closer to the store's entrance.

Shares of both Kmart and Sears, Roebuck and Co. surged on the news, but some analysts are skeptical that it amounts to a home run.
On Wednesday, Kmart said it earned $553 million, or $5.45 per share, in the third quarter ended Oct. 27, compared with a loss of $23 million, or 26 cents per share, for the same period a year ago.
The merger, expected to close by the end of March 2005, is subject to approval by Kmart and Sears shareholders, regulatory approvals and customary closing conditions.

Kmart used bankruptcy to rid itself of some expensive leases.
While Chairman Eddie Lampert is the largest shareholder of both Kmart and Sears, and his vote carried a lot of sway, it seems highly improbable that a company that can't sell its merchandise and can post "profits" only by selling off its store base is able to make a $12.3 billion acquisition.

A deal was reached Friday between Haas-Carter Motorsports and the Kmart Corp. to continue sponsorship of the No. 26 Ford of Joe Nemechek and the No. 66 Ford of Todd Bodine for the first two races of the 2002 Winston Cup Series season.
In a statement released by Kmart, the company said that it would provide sponsorship for both teams to participate in the season-opening Daytona 500 and the following week in the Subway 400 at North Carolina Speedway.
Bodine’s Kmart Ford will also be represented in the February 10th Budweiser Shootout at Daytona.
