Being forfeited by his grandson Eustace FitzJohn in the reign of Stephen, Knaresborough was granted to Robert de Stuteville, from whose descendants it passed through marriage to Hugh de Morville, one of the murderers of Thomas Becket, who with his three accomplices remained in hiding in the castle for a whole year.
Knaresborough is said by Leland to be no great thing and meanely builded but the market there is quik.
During the civil wars Knaresborough was held for some time by the Royalists, but they were obliged to surrender, and the castle was among those ordered to be destroyed by parliament ~n 1646.

Mother Shipton was born at Knaresborough in a riverside cave during a violent thunderstorm in 1488.
The four knights first fled to Knaresborough, where legend has it that they were reviled even by the dogs of the town, although Hugh is also said to have built Hampsthwaite Church and dedicated it to the canonised priest as an act of penance.

A interesting point is that Knaresborough actually appears to have a large amount of natural habitat in the form of the plentiful crags in the town and it might be expected that at least some breeding might take place on the crags.
Occasionally seen in the Knaresborough area during spring and summer but not known to breed close to Knaresborough, although a possible location would be the Nidd Gorge as the habitat is quite suitable in some areas.

 St. Robert of Knaresborough
Although never officially canonised Robert is considered as one of the outstanding saints of the early thirteenth century, with churches dedicated to him both at Knaresborough and Pannall, in North Yorkshire.
In 1252, after the Trinitarian house at Knaresborough had acquired his hermitage, papal records offered an indulgence for "Building the monastery of St. Robert at Gnaresbur, where that saint's body is buried".
This followed his translation and although, as was mentioned at the beginning of this article, official canonisation never took place there was implicit approval given to the cult of this remarkable, holy and generous man.
