Strike zone - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Unofficially, the strike zone in Major League Baseball is often enforced as being from the knee of the batter to no higher than his belt, although there are a handful of umpires known to call the 'high' strike.
The strike zone is treated as a two dimensional plane parallel to the front of the plate and perpendicular to the playing surface.
In baseball, the strike zone is a conceptual rectangular area over home plate which defines the boundaries through which a pitch must pass in order to count as a strike when the batter does not swing.

CTV.ca Baseball to attempt to restore the strike zone
According to the rule book, a pitch should be called a strike if any part of a ball crosses over any part of home plate, and if the pitch is between the hollow of the knee and the mid-point between the belt buckle and shoulders.
Sandy Alderson, executive vice-president of baseball operations in the commissioner's office, hopes the return of the strike zone as defined in the rule book will help bring baseball back to the way it used to be played.
While much of the focus of this week's meetings is on free agents and trades, the GMs are also discussing issues like strike zone, time of game, body armour, the height of the mound and how to break three-way ties for the playoffs.

 Movie (Metro Times Detroit)
Cowards Bend The Knee is another unique offering by Montreal-based auteur Guy Maddin (who features in this film as a fictitious character bearing his name).
Maddin leavens his horror movie ambience with a lot of absurdist humor, offering a faux-silent acting style that allows the performers to strike exaggerated poses, heightening the impression of barely contained hysteria.
Cowards, made between Maddin’s two most accomplished films, Dracula: Pages From a Virgin’s Diary and The Saddest Music in the World, pales in comparison to those and seems a minor work.

Pain may also be felt at the end of the swing phase, when the decelerating leg reaches heel strike.6 The most common symptom is pain on the lateral side of the knee during motion which may radiate proximally or distally.
Immediately after heel strike the knee angle is approximately 30o or a little less; patients with a predisposition to this syndrome (thicker bands where the posterior edge rubs over the lateral epicondyle) will be in an "impingement zone" near the 30o angle.
In their examination of cadavers, Orchard, et al.,1 found that the patients with potential problems had ITBS where the posterior edge of the band was anterior to the lateral epicondyle in knee extension, as differentiated from cadaver specimens where the posterior edge was overlying the lateral epicondyle in full extension.

These reductions in adduction moments at the hip and knee for the Japanese may be caused by a significant increase in the hip and knee abduction moments that is seen just after heel strike (Figure 1).
Both the adduction moment at the knee and at the hip are lower in a Japanese population than they are in a Caucasian population even after normalizing for the effects of height and weight.
For example, the adduction moment at the knee has been shown to influence the outcome of high tibial osteotomy, a treatment for medial compartment OA at the knee (4).

Introductory Karate - Lesson 12: Introduction to Snap Kicks
The kick should strike the target with the ball of the foot while the knee is nearly straight (should be capable of penetrating at least two inches into the target).
If the knee is brought significantly higher than the waist, it will likely result in a slower kick and if the knee is not brought at least as high as the waist then you will likely bash your foot into the knee of shin of your opponent.
The six basic kicks in Shotokan karate are the front snap kick, front thrust kick, the side snap kick, the side thrust kick, the round snap kick, and the back thrust kick.

 Striking the Ball
To hold foot geometry as you strike through the ball and follow through, it is helpful to lift your knee as part of the follow through.
If no soccer wall is available, find a goal, and practice holding foot geometry, hitting the middle of the ball, and knee snap by shooting into the back of the goal or side netting from just a few feet away.
This means that the speed with which you can straighten your leg determines how hard you can strike the ball.

Common knee injuries iliotibial band syndrome runners knee
As you probably guessed, since the ITB runs from the hip down to the knee, the upward movement of the right hip stretches the tensor fascia lata and overall ITB at the precise time that it is trying to shorten and control adduction of the right thigh.
You are at increased risk for ITBS, compared to the runner who prefers flat surfaces, and your ITB troubles are likely to strike on the 'down' leg, the one positioned toward the outside of the road.
This means that for the person who trains excessively on the track, ITBS will almost always strike in the left (inside) leg, because the left tensor fascia lata and its bands must control a greater deceleration of adduction than the right (outside) hip.

With labor strife practically kicked off the schedule at last and memories of the 232-day strike beginning to fade from memory, players and fans can concentrate on the final two months of a scintillating, power-charged 1996 baseball season.
That's how most fans felt when they heard that bargaining talks in baseball's endlessly acrimonious and foolish labor dispute had hit another snag--this one involving the "service time" players had either accrued or not accrued during the strike of 1994-95.
When Andre Dawson announced his retirement last week, a couple of astonished doctors pointed out that the great slugger had undergone twelve knee surgeries in his 21-year career--seven on the right knee, five on the left.

Martial Arts Ezine Issue 62 Increasing The Power of Your Roundhouse Kick
We will define the roundhouse kick for the purposes of this martial arts article as a kick executed from a cocked knee position whose arc travels approximately parellel with the ground as the knee snaps straight and travels across your centerline striking with the shin down to the top of the foot.
So what we now see is that during the roundhouse kick, or any other martial arts strike for that matter, is we want to stay as relaxed as possible, use as many of our muscle groups as possible in the correct timing (gross coordination), and breath out as we strike.
Most martial artists think this is one of their weakest kicks when it could actually be one of their most powerful weapons in their arsenal of kicks, punches, and other strikes.

 Ju Jutsu Throwing
In my Ju Jutsu system if it is close up grappling at standing range I will still strike first, butt, knee, elbow, bite, palm strike, gouge, stomp - whatever it takes to bring the 'man down' - throwing would not be my main aim.
In combat Ju Jutsu the 'throw' is the result of you stepping up and side stomping down onto the outside knee ligaments and collapsing the leg - end result, opponent on the floor and at your mercy.
Battlefield Ju Jutsu was a totally different art to anything that came later, its purpose was to finish the enemy by whatever means fair or foul (usually foul).

The Physician and Sportsmedicine: Quick Solutions for Iliotibial Band Syndrome
Histopathologic studies (9) in patients who have chronic ITBS show that the tissue under the ITB consists of synovium that is a lateral extension and invagination of the knee joint capsule, rather than a separate bursa as previously described in the literature.
The ITB moves anterior to the epicondyle as the knee extends and slides posteriorly as the knee flexes, remaining tense in both positions (5).
A biomechanical study (7) of runners who had ITBS found that the posterior edge of the band impinges against the lateral epicondyle just after foot strike in the gait cycle.
