When I first visited Knettishall for familiarisation last May I suspected that the course lengths would need to be towards the top end of the guidelines.
As most of you were warming up for your runs at Knettishall Heath I was just crawling into my bed after an invigorating 'through the night' run in the Epping Forest Rodings Rally.
Clive originally planned with electronic punching in mind – ideal in a compact area like Knettishall, but as the club decided that they lacked the experience in its use, there had to be some minor changes, particularly to the long courses.

First noted at Knettishall Heath on 8/7 and also recorded from Strumpshaw Fen on 14/8 and from the garden, where trapped on seven dates between 29/7 and 19/8.
Additional records were from Mannington Hall, Knettishall Heath and a late one, presumably of the second brood, at Surlingham Church Marsh on 26/8.

Its efforts bore some fruit in the 1980s and early 1990s with the successive opening of the Peddars Way (Knettishall Heath to Hunstanton), the Icknield Way (Ivinghoe to Knettishall Heath) and the Wessex Ridgeway (Lyme Regis to Avebury).
Although only the Ridgeway and Peddars Way have National Trail status, the connecting routes are recognised by local authorities, facilitating a continuous 583km/363-mile walk diagonally across southeast England from Lyme Regis on the south coast to Hunstanton on the Wash, sometimes known as the Greater Ridgeway.

Knettishall Heath looks at first glance to offer no challenges, but there's some tricky areas.
Andrew made the most of these areas and I know some of you enjoyed the challenges of Controls 129, 158 and 152 in the East of the map, you've got to think carefully there or you'll lose time.

We like the North Norfolk section of this so much that we have done it twice so far - left to right, or Hunstanton to Cromer both times - and are vaguely considering the possibility of doing it the other way around.
The Angles Way runs between Yarmouth and Thetford, is approximately 75 miles long, and crosses from Broadland into the sandy soils, heaths and coniferous trees of Breckland, the landscape of west Norfolk.
