This essay was first written as a preface to his Knickerbocker Holiday in 1938.
In Knickerbocker Holiday I tried to remind the audience of the attitude toward government which was prevalent in this country at the time of the revolution of 1776 and throughout the early years of the republic.
At that time it was generally believed, as I believe now, that the gravest and most constant danger to a man's life, liberty, and happiness is the government under which he lives.

Knickerbocker Holiday is a thoughtfully created film that missed.
With World War II raging, the time was ripe for a reaffirmation of the "American spirit," the complex national emotions that are represented in political jargon by mother and apple pie.
The stage Knickerbocker, which admittedly enjoyed only a modest success, concerned the gut issues of patriotism, political corruption, man's inhumanity to man, and the rights of the individual to dissent.

Knickerbocker Holiday: Washington County Virginia Sheriff's deputy Susan Knickerbocker, shown here saddled for action, completed the Mounted Police Officer Certification course conducted during June at Ocala, Florida's Mounted Police Training Facility.
Knickerbocker's wise course was actually an intensive 60-hour class covering search and rescue, horseback patrol, firing weapons while mounted, suspect approach and handcuffing, plus administration of a mounted patrol unit.
Her boss, Sheriff Fred Newman, describes her skills as "very proficient," which means county monies can be saved by Knickerbocker sharing her knowledge with other deputies, eliminating the need for them to study at outside locations.

The KNICKERBOCKER is a Waltz which was said to be the design of Dance Master Allen Dodsworth in 1888 in New York while observing his advanced students making up new combinations while dancing the waltz.
Dodsworth's may have become a sort of Official version as he called it the 'New Knickerbocker'.
These motions, when accompanying the delightful rhythm of a suitable waltz, are certainly more in accord with our ideas of poetic motion, and more fascinating to the dancers, than any other combination".

A musical whose book was written by an American dramatist (Maxwell Anderson), with music by a German political exile (Kurt Weill), and starring a Canadian actor who couldn't sing (Walter Huston), are hardly ingredients for a successful run, yet Knickerbocker Holiday was one of the delights of the 1938-39 Broadway season.
Huston was magnificent as the corrupt and tyrannical New York governor Peter Stuyvesant and his croaky rendition of "September Song" received standing ovations nightly.

By his own admission not much of a singer, Huston introduced the American pop music standard "September Song"; in the 1938 Broadway show "Knickerbocker Holiday." His recording of the Kurt Weill-Maxwell Anderson song was a best-seller that year on the Brunswick label.
Regrettably, when the film Knickerbocker Holiday (1944) was made three years later, Huston's role went to Charles Coburn, who, nevertheless, sang the song in the film, one of the few songs retained from the show.
He remained active-and prominent-in such movies as Summer Holiday (1948), The Great Sinner (1949), and The Furies (1950), the last-named completed shortly before his death.

Once again he was fired at the end of his first year, for public statements he made on behalf of a student seeking conscientious objector status and his pacifist views.
Anderson got his revenge in Valley Forge and Knickerbocker Holiday, two plays in which he satirized this supposedly pacifist sect.
His great love of music, the result of early family influence, is evident in plays like "Truckline Cafe", for which he composed one of the songs, and in the fact that he composed the libretti for "Knickerbocker Holiday", "Lost in the Stars", and several other plays he wrote with Kurt Weill.

Composer Kurt Weill and playwright Maxwell Anderson had been friends since 1938, when they had collaborated on the musical 'Knickerbocker Holiday'.
Weill had emigrated from Germany only a few years earlier, after achieving success as a theatre composer in his homeland with 'Die Dreigroschenoper (The Threepenny Opera)', 'Happy End', 'Aufsteig' and 'Fall der Stadt Mahogonny (Rise and Fall of the City of Mahagonny)', and many other works.
His first staged work in his adopted homeland was the anti-war musical 'Johnny Johnson' (1936).

Pure whimsy, up to and including Knickerbocker himself, it purported to be a chronicle of the early years of the city and its growth under such leaders as "Peter the Headstrong." It was a ludicrous account, absurd in every respect, and American readers for many years failed to grasp that it was fiction.
In Anderson's adaptation, Irving himself sits on the side writing with a quill pen about the actions onstage, sometimes stopping the characters to tell them what to do.
So it was that "Knickerbocker Holiday" started out as chiefly an anti-New Deal diatribe.
