  Knightfall - DC Database
Knightfall was the name of a nineteen part storyline that ran through issues of Batman, Detective Comics and Showcase '93 from May until October of 1993.
The plot of Knightfall began with the master criminal Bane freeing all of the maximum-security inmates of Arkham Asylum, a notorious psychiatric facility in Gotham City.
The storyline of Knightfall drove a large rift in the relationship between Robin and Batman, as Batman sought to face the outbreak alone.

BAT - BLOG : BATMAN TOYS and COLLECTIBLES: Batman: Knightfall & Some Batman Comic Book History.
However, I liked Knightfall, I loved Sword of Azrael (one of my all time favourites) but I didn't like the fact that HE was the choice of the next Batman, but then later on we found out that was sort of the point, so he could fall.
So, I love Knightfall and the downfall of Hal Jordan, and the Death of Superman (but not the mullet) because they had a good go and shaking things up, and making a massive go of it, and leaving and impact that doesn't screw with character marketing and keeps the fans (mostly) happy.
"Knightfall" more or less drove me away from comics, too (together with "Emerald Twilight" and a couple other indicators that comics had entered an "age" too sick and twisted for my tastes), but I actually made it all the way through to the end.

Knightfall, and the subsequent Knightquest and Knightsend story arcs it spawned marks the first truly *epic* storyline in the Batman comic book titles.
The biggest problem with Knightfall is that the actual story begins here, but there are countless back-issues of comics and collected editions that you'll need to pick up to understand how everything got to this point.
The result is that "Knightfall" is the opening act of a much larger story, continued in "Knightquest: The Crusade" and "Knightquest: The Curse" as Bruce Wayne begins the long road to recovery and reclaiming his mantle.

The biggest surprise from the book "Knightfall" was that nowhere does there appear a picture of P. Anthony (Tony) Ridder with devil horns drawn on his forehead.
The author of "Knightfall," Davis Merritt, says there are no "pure villains" in the book, but Ridder comes close.
He's depicted as the force behind all that is wrong with the Knight Ridder newspaper chain, symbolic of the greed that eats away at newsroom budgets in many U.S. newspapers and harbinger of a threat to democracy itself, given its reliance on newspapers for information people need to make informed decisions.

The notion of strict separation between the business and journalism functions of newspapers is relatively recent in terms of the whole of American newspaper history, and judging by current practice, it may be only a passing phase.
It will resonate and reverberate in newsrooms, and should be required reading for anyone concerned about journalism and the future of democracy.
