It is the traditional county town of Leicestershire, and, since 1997, has been a self-governing unitary authority.
It became a county borough when these were established in 1889, but, as with all county boroughs, was abolished by the Local Government Act 1972 in 1974, becoming an ordinary district of Leicestershire.

The native apples of Leicestershire are seldom grown and rarely sold these days but Professor Wardlaw's orchard project may mean old varieties such as Annie Elizabeth and Lady Sudeley make a comeback.
The cooking apple 'Annie Elizabeth' was raised in 1857 by a magistrate's clerk in Knighton, Leicester and proved popular with the Victorians because its stripy pattern and glossy colours looked great as a table decoration.
