"Knightriders" is full of symbolism and themes that reflect not only the real world, but the life of George Romero as well.
While the story in "Knightriders" is very important, all of the themes and relationships could have been presented and given proper justice in 90 minutes -- 2 hours tops.
"Knightriders" is presented in an anamorphic widescreen, which is letterboxed at 1.85:1.

Knightriders is thoroughly engrossing during the jousting tournaments and whenever Ed Harris is onscreen, but is less successful in-between, when toeing the line of the Arthurian Legend makes the film too mannered.
The cinematography in `Knightriders' is surprisingly well done, as B movies are not usually known for their great camera work.
Knightriders is a fun, drawn out tale with lots of action and a lot of heart.

Cracks are beginning to form in the knightriders' idyllic, Camelot-like exterior.
Anchor Bay Entertainment presents Knightriders in a gorgeous widescreen (1.85:1, 16X9 enhanced) transfer with a clean, sharp image and accurate, if slightly dull, hues (the colors have always been a bit washed out, so it must have been intentional).

Knightriders is superbly acted with great performances by a then virtually unknown Ed Harris as well as special effects wizard Tom Savini, who has a much larger role in Knightriders than probably any of the other appearances he's made combined.
Knightriders is one of the better DVD releases of a George Romero film and is sure to delight fans.
Knightriders may disappoint horror fans looking for a horror film, but the film really is a fun well-crafted masterpiece with deep meaning and strong performances by the actors and actresses, especially Ed Harris.

 dOc DVD Review: Knightriders (1981)
Knightriders is arguably Romero's most ignored film, probably for the reason that it's not a horror piece.
In Knightriders, King "Billy" William (Ed Harris) leads a group of medieval performers around the U.S. The twist to this entertainment fair, however, is that the knights use motorcycles instead of horses.
Knightriders essentially tells the story of this close knit group and how they must deal with a leader who furiously resists change and other members who have stopped believing in the magic of their own profession.

Martin / Knightriders - PopMatters Film Review
Knightriders remains a personal favorite and a unique example of a genre film with a cockeyed alternative agenda.
The audacity of Billy's vision and the fervor with which he struggles to preserve it in the face of a potential corporate takeover of the group obviously bears a parallel to Romero's efforts as an independent filmmaker.
Knightriders exhibits Romero's skill at depicting physical exuberance in sequence after sequence of masterfully edited shots of speeding bikes, splitting lances and swinging maces.

It's too bad he didn't make more like this, because while I am a huge fan of films like "Dawn of the Dead", this film shows that Romero has the ability to tell a good tale outside of the realm of the macabre.
"Knightriders" is the story of a rag-tag travelling renaissance fair, whose prime attraction is armored men jousting on motorcycles.
"Knightriders" is probably the closest Romero has come to producing an epic film, and is a must-see for his fans and recommended for anyone else who enjoys jousting, motorcycle crashes, or anachronistic themes.

The thing that made Dawn of the Dead such a great film is that it is an exemplary horror film, but also a brilliant metaphor for 1970's consumer culture (it's still brilliant).
Knightriders is obviously about filmmaking and the challenges of keeping everything under the wings of the leader who wants the public to see it's about more than just the spectacle but the substance underneath.
Romero, a great director still has a great sense of editing and the action scenes are good, but it is all weighed down by a solemnity that is never understood when their activities as modern knights is borderline ridiculous.

Knightriders also offers a glimpse of the less pleasant side of Faire lifenamely the tawdry, unkempt patrons who care nothing for history or pageantry, for whom a day at Faire is no different than one at Coney Island.

 DVD Verdict Review - Knightriders
After Dawn of the Dead was a commercial success for director George Romero he wanted to make a personal film with multiple levels and textures, as well as a tale outside the horror genre.
That film was Knightriders, a film about knights who joust on motorcycles in modern day, and went into instant obscurity as "nine people went to see it." Romero fans have resurrected this film in the video market, however, and now Anchor Bay has produced a fine DVD presentation.
He wanted to tell a tale of Camelot set in the modern day, with conflict between people who still wanted to follow the Code, and those who only lived for the action and fun.

By the end we're ready to believe Harris should step down as king only because he's been playing the role too long and should just get back in step with the times.
Issues like these are not the heart of KNIGHTRIDERS, however, and the drawcard for many theatregoers in 1981 would have been the expertly handled action sequences - it didn't hurt that these would have cashed in on the MAD MAX films that were also around at the time.
Abrupt conclusion to film pretty much denies all the naiveté that underpins its central idea.
