Order of the Holy Sepulchre - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Pilgrimages to the Holy Land were a common if dangerous practice during the period from shortly after the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ and throughout the middle ages.
(The restoration of a Latin Patriarchate of Jerusalem by Pius IX in 1847 superseded the Franciscans.) Consequently, as early as 1336, the Franciscans were enrolling applicants among the lay confraternity of the Knights of the Holy Sepulchre, in ceremonies frequently mentioned in the itineraries of pilgrims.
It is possible that where mention is made of the "possessions of the Holy Sepulchre", the allusion is to the Canons of the Holy Sepulchre who had convents in various lands, and not to the knights.

Mission of the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem
To support the Christian presence in the Holy Land means both to support the existence of living Christian communities-i.e, the Church-in the Holy Land and to witness to Christian values in that region.
By Holy Land is meant all that territory designated as the "Promised Land" in Sacred Scriptures and especially associated with the life and teaching of Jesus.
The material aid of the Order in the Holy Land is particularly directed toward the financial support of the institutional activities of the Latin Patriarchate of Jerusalem, including pastoral care, maintenance of clergy, support of the seminary, construction and maintenance of parish churches and school buildings, and subsidy of school operations.

Sandwiched between the Knight of Malta and Knight Templar Degrees are the "Knight of the Holy Sepulchre" and "Knight of the Christian Mark," appearing as the eleventh and twelfth in his list.
An early version of the Knight of the Holy Sepulchre Degree (Chevalier de Saint Sepulchre), dating perhaps between 1765 and 1782, is part of the Collection Maçonnerie des Hommes in the famous Kloss Collection in the library of Freemasons Hall at The Hague.
Its content confirms that it actually was an early version of the Knight of the Holy Sepulchre Degree, rather than just a degree with a similar name, as is the case with a degree called "Sublime Master and Knight of the Holy Sepulchre," which was the sixth degree of the revised Clermont System.

The Orthodox Patriarch of Jerusalem was the leader of the Byzantine Guards of the Holy Sepulchre.

CATHOLIC ENCYCLOPEDIA: Knights of the Holy Sepulchre
It was for the deliverance of the Holy Sepulchre that the crusades were organized; it was for its defence that military orders were instituted.
Consequently, after 1342, to be enrolled among the Knights of the Holy Sepulchre, it was necessary to apply to the Franciscans, and from this period the itineraries of pilgrims mention frequent receptions into this confraternity — improperly called an order, since it had no monastic rule, regular organization, or community of goods.
Where mention is made of the possessions of the Holy Sepulchre, the allusion is to the Canons of the Holy Sepulchre, who had convents in various lands, and not to the knights, as some writers believe.
