Knightswood originally lay in the Dunbartonshire parish of New or East Kilpatrick.
By 1910, as the writer T C F Brotchie (1878-1937) observed, Knightswood was a beauty spot located to the south-west of the Forth and Clyde Canal, made up of farmland and disused mining works.
Knightswood was built in a similar style to Mosspark with low density "cottage" style dwellings and four-in-a-block apartments.

By 1929 the estimated population of upper and lower Knightswood was about 30,000 and in October of that year there occurred an event which was of vital significance for the new housing communities springing up - the union of the two great churches, the United Free and the Church of Scotland.
