Kniphofia ensifolia belongs to a large genus of some 70 species, many of which are attractive garden subjects.
Kniphofia ensifolia is found growing naturally along watercourses usually in marshy soil where water is abundant, it enjoys wet feet, although in cultivation it can be grown in normal garden soil if enough water is provided.
Kniphofia ensifolia is easily propagated from fresh seed sown in spring in seed trays or frames.

About 70 species of Kniphofia occur in Africa and 47 of these are found in the eastern areas of South Africa.The genus Kniphofia is very closely related to the genus Aloe.

Kniphofia afficianados will find most of what there is to know about this genus in L.E. Codd's monograph The South African Species of Kniphofia (Bothalia 9, parts 3 and 4 (October 1968)).
A lower-altitude kniphofia than most we grow (found in the wild up to 1230m/4000ft), but one that flowers well here, albeit so late in the season (October) that it is at more than some risk of freezing first.
The color is reminiscent of 'Ice Queen' (in fact, Ginny has long called the plant 'Ice King'), but the size of the inflorescence (typically 12"-15" long) and the denseness of the flowers puts this one in a league of its own.

Kniphofia reflexa was 'rediscovered' in 1996 in the Afua swamp in Cameroon but has subsequently disappeared from this site (3).
Kniphofia reflexa is the only member of this genus to be found in central-West Africa, making its conservation particularly important (3).
Propagation of Kniphofia reflexa from seed, with a view to reintroducing this species to the Afua Swamp, is also a possibility (2).
