HHMI News: Learning How a Virus Evades the First Line of Immune Defense
Yokoyama and his colleagues collaborated with researchers from the Max von Pettenkoffer-Institute in Germany and the University of Rijeka in Croatia.
According to Yokoyama, the new findings may help explain why people with damaged acquired immunity—such as those with AIDS, autoimmune diseases or transplant recipients who are on immune-suppressing drugs—often suffer severe CMV infections.
Given this clinical experience, Yokoyama and his colleagues now seek to extrapolate their findings to human CMV to determine whether the virus is undergoing the same type of mutation to evade the innate immune system.

 Knock Yokoyama Information
In 2000, a 21-year-old campaign volunteer accused Yokoyama of sexual harassment, claiming that the governor groped her for 30 minutes in the back of a campaign truck.
Yokoyama denied the charges, but the Osaka District Court found him liable for ¥11 million in damages, following a highly-publicized trial in which the plaintiff testified from behind an opaque screen to avoid revealing her identity.
Following the judgment, Yokoyama resigned: he was replaced by a female LDP bureaucrat, Fusae Ota.

Yokoyama's case received wide publicity partly because he is a colorful politician, a former comedian in a duo called "Knock-Out," hence his name Knock (his partner was called Out), — and because he both denied the allegation and refused to contest it in court.
