Engine knocking - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A knock sensor consists of a small piezoelectric microphone on the engine block, connected to the engine's electronic control unit.
Modern automotive and small-boat engines have sensors that can detect knock and delay the spark plug firing to prevent it, allowing engines to safely use petrol of lower octane ratings, with the consequence of reduced power and efficiency.
It is caused by an instantaneous ignition of the remaining fuel/air mixture in the form of an explosion.

PORTKNOCKING - A system for stealthy authentication across closed ports. : ABOUT : summary
Port knocking is used to keep all ports closed to public traffic while flexibly opening and closing ports to traffic from users who have authenticated themselves with a knock sequence.
Recently, the use of port knocking and OS fingerprinting (fwknop) was presented at DEF CON 12 and discussed on Slashdot.
Port knocking was the subject of long Slashdot debate.

AAA : Your Car : I hear a knocking noise in my engine. Should I be concerned?
There are knocking noises that are not as critical, but the difference between a noise that is a major problem and a noise that is a minor problem is so subtle that only a trained professional technician can tell the difference.
Knocking noises are usually caused by two parts banging against each other that shouldn't bang together.

 Engine knocking
Knocking can typically be prevented by higher octane gasoline, reduction of in cylinder temperature (cooling or compression reduction), or the addition of "lead" to the gasoline.
Knocking or pinging in internal combustion engines occurs when the fuel ignites before the spark occurs at maximum compression.
To the driver, knocking can be detected as "knocking" or "pinging" noise during hard acceleration.

 Howstuffworks "What does octane mean?"
When gas ignites by compression rather than because of the spark from the spark plug, it causes knocking in the engine.
One of the strokes is the compression stroke, where the engine compresses a cylinder-full of air and gas into a much smaller volume before igniting it with a spark plug.
One way to increase the horsepower of an engine of a given displacement is to increase its compression ratio.

 Knock, Knock, Knock
Port knocking is a legitimate security concept that has been discussed on Slashdot recently, and some virus writers have started using it "secure" their own backdoors.
A legitimate port knocking application would often parse firewall logs, waiting for a sequence of logged errors and then spring to life, manipulating firewall rules to open a port.
There are multitudes of backdoors out there that are far more sophisticated and stealthy than MyDoom, and port knocking is just one way of several to add a layer of control and stealth.

 port knocking - a Whatis.com definition
Port knocking takes advantage of firewall rules to allow a client who knows the "secret knock" to enter the network through a particular port by performing a sequence of connection attempts (called a knock sequence).
Port knocking is an authentication method used by network administrators to control access to computers or other network devices behind a firewall.
This Linux Journal article explains how port knocking works.

 Port knocking
Port knocking is slick: a service only accepts requests which have knocked the ports in a predetermined pattern.
IE, normally sshd is listening for requests on port 22, but with port knocking it wouldn't even acknowledge its existence to a ping or request unless you had hit port 1048, 1037, 2059, 1950, 4050, 40, 1048, and then port 22 within a specific amount of time.
I got pointed to a nifty idea called port knocking several weeks ago and have spent a decent chunk of time going through it.

Port knocking is a method of allowing access to firewalled services given a preconfigured "knock." The knock consists of a sequence of access attempts to closed ports on a system.
Port knocking is obviously not recommended for services you wish to be publicly accessible, such as HTTP and SMTP.

I have just brought my 2002 tacoma 4x4 with 4 cylinder engine in to the dealer for the second time for an inceasingly louder knocking sound, especially when the truck is started cold, but it is also audible at cruising speeds.

A critique of port knocking - Search Engine Optimization, Google Optimization
knocking is a method of "message transmission across closed ports." It works like this: initially a firewall blocks all ports on the server.
The client issues a series of connection requests (knocks) to different ports; these are, of course, dropped since the ports are blocked.
However, there is a daemon that monitors the log files for connection requests, and the sequence of requests serves as an encrypted code.

Excessive blue smoke indicates problems from low engine compression and/or worn piston rings, scored cylinder walls or leaking valve stem seals The blue smoke is caused by crankcase oil entering the combustion chamber and being emitted after partial combustion through the exhaust
The most common reason for white smoke are in-operative glow plugs low engine compression, a bad injector spray pattern, late injection timing or injection pump problems.

The engine knocking has been there for some time, and it disapears when I use high octane.
Is it possible that knocking is caused by the bad cat as perhaps it is partially obstructed, thus affecting not only exhaust itself but the readings of the two oxygen sensors?

NewsForge A critique of port knocking
There are two reasons why a port knocking attacker may be thwarted: one is that only some ports are allowed in knock sequences (customized by the user) and the second is that the knock sequence can be encrypted with a password.
The author assumes that if port knocking becomes widespread, say to the point that 10% of all servers use it, then 10% of the time an attacker will find that his port-knocking attacks were worthwhile.
I like the fact that the port knocking implementation is not written in C, a language which is subject to buffer overflow bugs.

 Bill Bumgarner: Port Knocking
The claim is that because "knocking" on closed ports doesn't cause a stateful exchange, there is no way for the "hacking client" know that port knocking is being used.
There are, of course, all kinds of fun things that could be layered on top of "port knocking" to make it harder to crack, but it is still largely an exercise in obscuring the means of access.
The authors of that site also mention that Port knocking can generalize beyond protection of ports to transfer of data across closed ports.

Slashdot Combining Port Knocking With OS Fingerprinting
Port knocking is an excellent way to greatly reduce the probability that someone will be able to use a newly discovered exploit from using it against your server before an update is available to fix the exploit.
As long as port knocking schemes are implemented on two OSes, you could let the port knocker determine which OS you're connecting from, and connect to a specific service depending upon it.
The primary purpose of port knocking is to hide the fact that you have open ports to begin with.
