Stones of Ireland - Knowth double passage tomb
Knowth is one of the grandest of the 300 or so passage-tombs in Ireland, and along with the other two great mounds of Newgrange and Dowth, is part of the huge necropolis found in the Boyne Valley.
The mound is made up of sod, clay, stones, and shale; some of the stones, up to 4 tons in weight, were probably quarried within a distance of 8-12km (5-8 miles), though some other smaller stones may have been brought to the site from some 40km (25mi) away.
One of the greatest surprises of Knowth is the number of beautifully decorated stones of the passages.

 Ley Lines
From R21 in the interior of Newgrange the standing stones are placed in alignment with Knowth and Dowth and in case this could be construed as accidental the builders have re-affirmed the alignments by extending the lines to standing stones on the other side of the mound leaving no doubt as to their intentions.
This also demonstrates that the standing stones were positioned before the mound was built and that R21 was a standing stone before it became incorporated in the passage of the mound.
This means that it is likely that Knowth and Dowth are older than Newgrange and consequently this shows how seriously misleading previous interpretations of these mounds have been.

Knowth has two passageways - a 40 metre long East facing one which ends in a cross shaped chamber similar to that at Newgrange and a shorter, curved West facing one.
Normally it would be in the inner chamber, but at Knowth is it wedged between the walls of the passageway, where it is believed to have become stuck when thieves attempted to remove it several centuries ago.

Although not as famous as its nearby relative at Newgrange, Knowth is however arguably a more important site as far as megalithic art is concerned and as a centre of important activity over a far longer period of time.
Long after Newgrange slipped into an untidy mound, Knowth was used as a settlement for thousands of years and various dwellings were built around and even on top of the mound.
The large main mound at Knowth is swarmed with smaller satellite tombs which are irregularly placed around it, some are thought to be older than the main mound itself because the kerb of the main mounds curves to avoid at least one satellite tomb.
