During Harrison's governorship of the Indiana Territory, Grouseland was the focal point of the social and official life of the Territory.
Fort Knox II was one of three forts built and garrisoned by the US Army in the Vincennes area to protect settlers and to control the strategic Wabash River during the period of early settlement.
Around 1809, Vincennes became the center of military activity for the Indiana Territory, and Fort Knox II served as the staging area for the troops that fought at the Battle of Tippecanoe.

The County of Grant was approved February 10, 1831 by the General Assembly of the State of Indiana.

Fort Knox II was an early U.S. military post, occupied from 1803 to 1813, whose purpose was to provide military support for the town of Vincennes, then capital of the Indiana Territory.
Its major contribution to the defense of the territory lay in its use as a staging area for the march to the Battle of Tippecanoe, in the fall of 1811.
Earlier excavations at the Fort Knox II site have exposed the stockade walls and associated features, allowing an interpretation of the fort's physical structure to be made, and a trash pit, which has provided detailed information about the life-styles, status, and subsistence practices of the fort's occupants during the period from 1811 to 1812.

The Westfalls went with his brothers to Knox County, Indiana, where he was nominated as a delegate to the first Indiana Territorial Convention in 1802.
His sister Sarah apparently married the James Canter who was head of a family in 1840 in Mason County, and it was her two eldest sons and heirs, orphans, who conveyed their interest in the tract on Kanawha Run in 1850.
The Joseph Friend in Kanawha County in 1850, a wealthy salt manufacturer, was probably from Chesterfield County, Virginia, and not related to this family at all despite the coincidence of his name and occupation.
