  Historical Sketch of Columbiana County
Columbiana County is located on the eastern edge of Ohio and is bounded on the east by the State of Pennsylvania, on the south by the Ohio River and Jefferson and Carroll Counties, on the west by Carroll and Stark Counties, and on the north by Mahoning County.
In 1810, the population of Columbiana County was 10,878; in 1820, 22,033; in 1840, 40,378; in 1860, 32,836; in 1880, 48,602; and in 1900, 68,590.
County roads were built as early as 1803, and 1805, a state road was constructed from the mouth of the Little Beaver through Lisbon to Trumbull County.

The present efficient Clerk of the Court for Jefferson County is a native of Ohio, and was born in Clifton, Greene County, October 1, 1844.
At an early age removed with his parents to Illinois, locating in Knox County on a farm, where he was in the Army of the Tennessee, participating in a number of engagements.

In dividing the county into civil townships little or no attention was paid to the township surveyed lines, Smithfield Wayne, Cross Creek and Salem being the only civil townships identical with those numbered by the government surveys, and consequently several of the civil townships embraced fractional parts of the numbered townships.
New Somerset, however, is the oldest hamlet in the township It is in the northwest corner of the township and was laid out by Baltzer Culp in February, 1816.
He emigrated from Fayette County, Pennsylvania, where he resided only a short time, coming there from Trenton, N. where he lived at the time of the revolution and at which place he enlisted in the American army.

He was married in Jefferson County, to Miss Leora Wilson, a native of Ohio.
COY, druggist, is a native of Ohio, and was born in Portage County, March 4, 1838; when fourteen years of age emigrated to Iowa with parents, locating in Buchanan County at Independence, his father, A. Coy, Esq., being one of the pioneer business men in that part, also at Hazelton.

He was born in Clinton county, Pennsylvania, on the 15th of April, 1841, a son of Benjamin B. Shaffer, a farmer, who removed from the Keystone state to Illinois in 1856, locating in Knox county, where he passed the remainder of his life.
Shaffer was born in Wayne County, Ohio, July 15, 1843, and was formerly a teacher in the public schools of Knox County.
The father studied medicine at Louisville, Kentucky, where after graduating, he engaged in practice, and from whence he removed to Sangamon and Knox counties, and continued the practice in the latter county until his death, which was caused by an accident on the cars at Galesburg, in 1870, he having attained the age of 70.

During the lumbering days, the waterways of Jefferson county were used extensively for the transportation of timber to the lumber mills.
The population of Knox township diminished to that of the 1890's or so but Knoxdale still thrives as a community since the mining boom did not over-inflate it.
