Researchers have learned that a slight change in the orientation of the ball with respect to the flow of air results in dramatic changes in the forces acting on the ball.
Similarly, as the ball rotates, a region that was turbulent due to the position of the stitches, might now become laminar.
This altering of the state of the flow from laminar to turbulent, separated to attached, would cause the forces on the ball to fluctuate as shown by the experiments.

The knuckle ball is thrown by gripping the ball with your knuckles or fingernails.
Because the ball isn't moving very fast, the air is able to pass over the stitches of the ball and cause the ball to move up and down or from side to side.
A knuckle ball thrown properly will move back and forth on its way to the plate which can often make a good hitter look very foolish when his swing is nowhere near the ball.

 Butterfly - News
The reason is that since the antispin rubber does not grip the ball, the spin on the ball continues to rotate in the same direction when struck by the antispin rubber.
The best way to demonstrate this is to take a ball, draw a line around its circumference and observe the rotation of the ball by simulating a constant rotation going away and coming back to a player.
If the ball is not spinning very fast to start with when leaving the "regular" rubber, so much rotation is lost to the point that very little spin is left and a knuckle ball effect occurs by the time the ball reaches the "regular" racket again.

Mastering the Knuckle Ball By Jodi L. Robinson, Assistant Coach Boston University In the development of young pitchers, it is most important to master the mechanics of the pitching motion before moving on to off speed and movement pitches.
Before starting to teach your pitcher to throw the knuckle ball here are three important points: 1) GRIP: The ball should be facing her palm with the "C" shape seam Index, middle, and ring finger are bent with the first knuckle of each finger on the seam.
And with a knuckle ball, alternating throwing fast balls and knuckle balls is a great way to stress the similarities in mechanics Remember, when your pitcher is learning how to throw new pitches, returning to the beginning is always very helpful.

I think the key element to throwing a knuckle ball is the arm motion.
You'll want to grip the ball with the first three fingers across the long part of the seam, and the thumb on the bottom.
My grip for the knuckle is to grip the ball's seem with your two middle fingers (in a raised knuckle fashion) while the first and little finger lay as flat as possible across the same seem and completing the clamping of the ball by placing your thumb comfortably underneath.

Bat Speed -- Baseball Hitting Forum
IF, the player is a little "late," he will hit the bottom-half of the ball which will produce a fly ball with "back spin," a desirable combination; a fly ball with "carry" to it.
On the other hand, if he is a little "early," he will hit the top-half of the ball, producing a ground ball with "over spin," another highly favorable combination; a ground ball which gains momentum.
It seems to me that in using rotational mechanics it is no different, as far as "aimimg" where to hit the ball, than the Charlie Lau school of thought, other than (and apparently very important) not to pull the knob of the bat to the ball.

He had, since 1952, a rookie pitcher with an incredible knuckle ball, named Hoyt Wilhelm, who could not only control it but throw it with greater velocity than most.
A knuckleballer's problem is that catchers can't hold it, so it backfires with men on base, especially in tight situations when a steal must be prevented.

During the downswing, the head should stay fixed behind the ball, and after impact, the arms should swing as far out as possible toward the target.
